CC didn't offer Latin but Foreign language is an admission requirement

Hello I received my AA working towards a history degree. I never took a FL because I really wanted to take Latin or Greek as it would be useful for my degree. Compared to taking Spanish or ASL. I am looking at applying to UF, FSU and UCF but they all require one year of FL for admission. Is there anyway I can get in and take latin or greek since no CCs where I have lived offered Latin or Greek?

Do you already speak another language (is English a second language for you?) If so, can you take a placement test in that language to demonstrate your skills? If not, will the schools accept an on-line course in Latin or Greek? Self-study may be your best choice if they will accept it.

Contact the admissions offices at the schools to discuss the options.

No I only speak English. I did not know you can take Latin online at a college and have that count for the FL requirement. Where would could I take an FL online and have it transfer to a uni?

I just don’t understand why I can’t take the class once I am there since no CC here offers it. Especially since Latin relates to my major. Even more so if I change it to a classics degree. Why would they expect me to take Spanish when I should focus on Latin or Greek.

You need to email the classics department, and ask if there is some kind of waiver for people in your situation.

Did you take a foreign language in high school? If so, will your CC give you credit for a CLEP exam in that language that would then fulfill the admissions requirements at one of the public universities? CLEP exams are a bit easier than AP exams, and a bit harder than an SAT II exam. If you did well in two years of high school foreign language, and you review a bit with SAT II and AP Language review books, you probably can get a CLEP score that will give you credit for a year of CC foreign language - if your CC accepts it. Ask the counselors at your CC about this.

Self-studying? IDK

Seems kinda silly to be forced to self study for class that is offered by the colleges but they wont let me in to take.

How much FL do you need? Can you get those credits as a special or non-degree student if you just register for one class in the summer session? Ask the department. You can’t be the first student with this problem.

Lots of people self-study languages: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/nyregion/a-teenage-master-of-languages-finds-online-fellowship.html

I’m sure your CC had more than one language option. (Any Romance language would have been helpful to you in your eventual study of Latin.) And I’m surprised your CC advisor, knowing you planned to move on to a four-year college, did not insist that you fulfill the language requirement–if you were badly advised, that’s a shame. I wish you luck, but I don’t see why a college would waive the requirement just because you prefer an unavailable option. They are looking for some assurance that you are capable of handling a foreign language. (And weren’t you required to take some foreign language in high school?)

No when I went to high school FL was not a requirement to finish. When I finished my AA a FL was not a requirement for entry only an exit requirement. So how is it my fault I did not meet requirements that were not there when I received my AA?

Not to mention once again I am a classics major. My degree audit says I take Latin I and II in my freshmen year. Something that was impossible because it was not offered at any community college within 150 miles.

It is kinda BS that I have to take additional FL classes not related to my major because it was not offered at the freshmen level. Oh and the fact that taking extra classes like that would eat up my scholarship money. This has nothing to do with preference it has to do with taking what is on my degree audit.

So I just got done talking to them and they said I could take Latin I and II to meet my admission requirement but they wont give me any credits for it.

Honestly I would like to take Latin online as this too would fulfill the requirement. I have not be able to find anything in state that allows me to do so. If anyone knows a college in Florida I can take it online that would be helpful.
