I dare everyone to go by "HPYCS" for this admissions season. Let's see what it takes to dismantle "HYPMS" har har! From now on, when I refer to elite schools, I will type HPYCS

aka PSYCH?

Aka

CHYMPS

Ha this is funny because I remember reading a thread a couple months ago with posters arguing about whether if it became HYPSMC, the C would stand for Caltech or Chicago.

I think the one poster who brought up Columbia was quickly dismissed.

Back to HYP. Makes sense too with the big gap between Yale and Columbia.

Yeah its HYP like I’ve thought from the beginning.

mermaid – true. CHYMPS is now busted, since Columbia has achieved a much higher rank this year than ever in the history of USNWR rankings, and Chicago has done better the past couple of years as well, expanding the possible C in CHYMPS to three universities.

Back to HYPSM and assume the C anomoly will not stick.

I wonder what An0maly would say about that… ;)

no no, I put them in order based on US news’ rankings.
Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Stanford=Penn(leave it out). so it’s HPYCS

Howabout HYCUPS?

As Penn was tied with Stanford, it could be CHaPPYS.

It would always be HYPSM. One year’s ranking won’t change anything at all. Caltech was #1 once, if there’s a C added, which isn’t going to happen for various obvious reasons, it would stand for Caltech.

Columbia breaking in the top 6 is just “once in a bluemoon” thing. it does not happen all the time. Next year, perhaps the order of the universe will go back to normal and HYPSMC (C for Caltech) will soon appear. Although I honestly think that HYPSMC is more of a perception than actual reality, as it is basically a prestige thing, that perception will last several decades and eras.

I said Columbia would outrank Penn.

no actually it’s never happened before, but I’ll bet a decent amount of money that Columbia is going to stay top 6 for usnews 2012 and usnews 2013. The incoming class stats got a little better this year and the C is moving to common app next year. So perhaps it’s time to adopt hypcs :)

Let’s see. But getting into HYPSMC is more special than getting into Columbia. Again, its about the feeling that you’ve made it into or have gone to one of the HYPSMC that makes it special. HYPSMC are still in a league above Columbia in terms of brand power and I guess that will stay for our life time.

bold prediction considering it was HYPC in the 50s-60s, HYP in the 70s and 80s, and then stanford rose to join them. Variables are also changing quicker these days, so I wouldn’t be so sure.

PSYCH (or HPYCS) makes sense as a set. MIT and Caltech are somewhat in a league of their own. they trump virtually any other school in terms of pure engineering/math/science but are rather weak (compared to PSYCH) in anything else related to humanities/social sciences. PSYCH are the most competitive and prestigious well rounded schools in the nation.

C as in Columbia. Caltech is going down. I believe it has been ranked on par or lower than Georgia Tech in the past few years. Also, it has low yield despite having a very small class size. Moreover, not many people know about Caltech. So, I dont know what is so great about Caltech that makes it on par with HYPSM.

sike, you’re not getting into PSYCH
