I’m not sure ‘brass’ is back in, but brushed gold or champagne accents/cabinet handles are in style now. I’m vacillating between whether to recommend stainless strapping on range hood, no metal accent, or let her go with the brass strapping.
My husband and I are right handed and like having our dishwasher to the right of the sink. It seems a common thing. But… I did find an article that said to the left (for righties) would be more efficienct - Left or Right – a kitchen design tip for dishwasher placement
I grew up as a right handed person in a family of lefties. Our dishwasher was on the left which is where the builder designed it to be. 55 years later, my left handed parents are still in that house with the dishwasher in the same spot. The house I have lived in for 25 years now has the dishwasher on the right. Having frequently done dishes at holiday gatherings at my parents’ house in recent years then used my own dishwasher at home, I can honestly say IME I have not noticed any difference having the dishwasher on one side or the other. I read the linked article but it doesn’t make sense to me anyway - I have to twist to the side regardless what side the dishwasher is on b/c I have to look and see where to fit the dishes, glasses, flatware, etc.
I’ve never thought about the dishwasher being a righty/lefty issue. I’ve had both over the years (all righties in my house). I’ve designed the kitchens in my last two houses. Both houses that I did have the dishwasher to the left of the sink. This current house I didn’t have a choice if I wanted the sink under the window (which was a priority for me) but the last house I could have moved it to the right. It just didn’t feel right to me ; )
The “wisdom” is you are using your dominant hand to scrape/rinse dish. You have the plate in your left hand at that point so dump it in the dishwasher which should be to your left.
So my dishwasher is on the left …is that why my right handed husband is sooo bad at loading it ? Time for a kitchen update!
Yup!! Time to re-examine your kitchen with some serious kaizen considerations and eliminate that muda.
I lived in two houses with dishwashers on the right and now have one in the left… can’t tell any difference.
We have lived in at least a dozen houses. The most important thing about DW/sink placement to us is that there needs to be plenty of space between the table and the sink for the dirty dishes to be placed, and then the DW needs to be on the other side of the sink. Dirty dishes, then sink, then DW.
@dragonmom you are a kaizen master. or a six sigma black belt.
At first I thought you were saying Dear Wife, like the wife needs to be on the other side of the sink!
One more time. If you are right handed then the DW goes on the left of the sink.
So @Mabelsmom , your hubbie has no excuse. No matter what he says.
Maybe there’s a tiny biomechanical advantage or efficiency improvement if the dishwasher is left of the sink when you are right-handed, but if the only place it fits into the design is on the right, I wouldn’t think twice about putting it on the right.
I’m not giving H any excuses in the new house. I designed the kitchen with a dishwasher on each side of the sink.
Two (regular) dishwashers sounds extravagant (I admit it is) but it turned out to be little more than doing double dishwasher drawers and less than putting a single DW drawer on each side. We’ll mainly use the thin top rack for flatware and adjust the middle rack to hold smaller plate (appetizer and luncheon size.) Our backs will appreciate that.
Yes, this! And because I am left handed, pick up dish with left hand, rinse ,and put in dishwasher all in one movement.
Unless you need two for religious reasons, I wonder if the second one is moving the trash and recycling from their logical locations. Or maybe trash is across the aisle on the island ?
When we built a few years ago, I was very hesitant to put in 2 dishwashers. Both my builder and kitchen designer insisted I do it and now I’m so happy to have them. One is next to the big kitchen sink and the other is on the island next to the secondary sink. I opted to place both dishwashers to the left of the sink so there was consistency. Trash on the right, DW on the left. Keeps it simple.
The island dishwasher is secondary so I took the silverware tray out and spaced the shelves to be more conducive to loading my baking bowls and tools. The main DW is set better for silverware and our daily dishes and glassware.
No matter what your dishwasher placement, it definitely does make sense to study your setup of cabinets and drawers. I am very happy to have my main glasses, plates and silverware so close to the dishwasher when unloading.
Colorado mom, that makes sense. My DW is on the right, but above it is glasses, mugs, and more right is plates and silverware drawer. So I guess there are valid reasons for either placement.
I’ve only seen the drawers in showroom, but I don’t know anyone who has them.
I popped by the house while I was in the neighborhood and got a whirlwind tour from @coralbrook. Everything is open construction at the moment so had to imagine how things would look - cb was about to test the fireplace. I did get up to the second floor and the views are going to be great, and more so from the eventual roof deck. It was a relatively foggy day or I would have taken pictures of the views.
We are almost done and ready for our big inspection!! Massive amounts of stuff getting delivered and it all has to be dragged into the house or raised up onto the roof somehow. I loaded photos with explanation.
Also loaded some photos of the style of kitchen door we chose. I asked the cabinet maker to make a custom sample for us. A very thin shaker style with bevel for easier cleaning.
The lower cabinets and tall cabinets in back of kitchen will be painted Sherwin Williams Snowbound. The refrigerator panels, side panels and upper cabinet are going to be Natural Maple with zero sheen as an accent. Then the stove cabinets and panel on back and side of peninsula are going to be a deep blue/green Sherwin Williams Riverway
