CC to UCD or State

I have the grades to get into the majority of state schools in CA, but I really want to go to UC Davis. I will be applying for direct admission, but in case I don't get in I was considering transferring from a community college. I plan to major in biology and eventually go to med school. I have heard when applying to med school, seeing community college on the application is a turnoff. Is this true? Do you think I should go to CC then transfer to UCD or go to a state school.

You are making it sound like it’s either UCD or community college. Which other UC’s or state schools are you considering? I think you can go the CC route, especially with a TAG, but don’t ignore your other options!

Yeah, I guess I should have been more clear on my question, sorry about that. I’m currently a senior and will be applying to all UC’s excluding Merced and Santa Cruz.

I haven’t really looked at state schools much because I was only considering UC’s. Davis’ reputable biology program is something I wanted to approach so I decided I would even transfer there if I had to. But after hearing the possibility of denial from med schools because of attending community college, I’m not sure what to do.

I’ve heard of the TAG program. IT’s a simple straightforward program, but my main concern is a long term issue with applying to med school as I’ve mentioned before.

Thanks for your help.

I love UCD. but if it’s not a financial issue, there are lot’s of great UC’s. Cal and UCLA of course, but UCSD, Irvine are well regarded for pre-med around here. Not sure which CSU’s for pre-med, but a few are very popular.

Care to share your latest stats? If it’s looking like you need a CSU safety ( i.e. if sat’s are less than 1800, GPA less then 3.5) there’s a pretty good CSU thread; on the parents forum I think.

Get your general-ed requirements out of the way at the CC (and make straight As doing it). Do your pre-med stuff at the university. Rock the MCAT.

I suggest you call up the premed advisor at a place like Davis and ask them if its true that CC xfers have a harder time. For that matter, you can call the admissions office at Davis and ask directly. Don’t believe everything you hear and read…
