CC -> UC -> Graduate School

Hey everyone,

I'm a HS senior and I have a couple questions about graduate school.

I applied to several UCs and Private Us, but the problem is that my low GPA will hurt my admission chances to one of these four year institutions.

I thought of a plan B and the plan is to go to a Community College then hopefully transfer into Cal, UCLA, or at the very least UCSD. I have high expectation and confidence that I will succeed in a community college.

The question is, will attending a cc before attending a UC hurt my chances of getting into a top B-school?

I know that job experience is important, as well as gpa, but leaving all that aside, will attending a CC have any impact?

Thanks in advance!

Oh and I know there are threads on this, but it didn't seem to answer the question.

My father went from a CCC to CSU Northridge for his undergraduate degree and earned a Ph.D from UC Berkeley.

I went from a CCC to the University of Idaho and am working on an MS from Indiana U.

Nobody will care that you did lower-division coursework at a community college. Don’t sweat it.

I second Polarscribe’s response.

This is what should cause some concern. You need to reflect on why you did a poor job academically in HS, and exactly why and how this will change in college. Confidence is not enough. To work your way from CC to a grad program will require resolve and work that you have not shown so far.

I am at a CC and currently am applying to UC’s. I am a board member of a pre-vet club at a local state school and ALL of the admissions counselors that we talk to have said that it doesn’t matter if you attend a CC at first and MANY suggest it. They want to see where you got your diploma, if anything.

Most people go to CC due to financial reasons and they cannot hold that against you. It’s also a great set up for a “sob story” about your struggles (if that is ever a strategy you must use in admissions or whatever).

I also didnt do well in Hs, but I’m nearly a 4.0 student in college. College is better suited for me. Definitely take the above advice and sit down and decide what you need to do differently!

Good luck!

B-school and grad school both provide graduate education but B-school is another bag of beans.

No, it won’t matter that you went to a CC first.

Do well at your CC and try to get into Phi Theta Kappa (the two-year college honor society). Try also to secure some leadership positions on the campus of your CC, including student government leadership if there is some. That will make it easier for you to transfer into a UC, but it will also be experience that can help you get into business school.

Thank you everyone for the great responses and advice. I value every single one of them, I really do.

@snarlatron I definitely agree with you. My GPA went downhill during junior year because of my involvement in car accidents, and well that doesn’t seem ironic for a 17 year old to say that, but none of them but one was my fault. I can’t look back on it and tell everyone my excuse, but I would like to add that I’m averaging a good 3.7~3.8 for the fall semester of my senior year. =)

@juillet Thanks for that advice! I didn’t even know anything about that until now, it’s definitely a good time for me to look into this stuff and know what needs to be achieved if I do decide to attend a CC.

Of course, any other additional responses will be appreciated, thanks in advance!

A friend went to a CC then got into multiple Ivies. She ended up going to Smith (a top liberal arts school) and is finishing up her Ph.D at Chicago. It can be done. But be sure to network while you’re there. My friend really worked her butt off at her CC but I think what helped her as well was a dean personally called multiple schools on her behalf to help her get accepted.
