does penn accept a cd of a musical recording of u to show special talent just for admissions purposes? i cant find any details on it on the website… anyone know details?

Yes, they accept recordings. A musical recording is considered a supplemental material, and just to make it easier for adcoms, you should attach a brief note to it regarding it's importance. Also, send it to the appropriate department. They will review it, then give feedback to the adcoms.

I'm recording mine tomorrow;)

ok thanks so much

what do you guys play im sending one too

Classical piano.......I'm sooooooo nervous about recording tomorrw!

I've never done it before, so we'll see how it goes.

ooh recording is fun. what piece did you record?

honestly... i havent recorded mine yet .. im doing it about in a week but im not technically doing it professionally... my piano teacher technically is a proffessional recorder so hes bringing over some of his equipment and im recording it on my yamaha motif 8 synthesizer.. im still not sure what songs i should record .. i think im going to stick to classical music .. possibly 3 or 4 of these: moonlight sonata 3rd movement by beethoven, fantasie impromptu by chopin, etude revolutionary by chopin, flight of the bumblebee, claire de lune by debussy, fantasia and fuga by bach but ill only play the fugue and i think thats about it .. i was planning on playing one or two minutes of each song .. will it hurt me in anyway if i do this on a synthesizer and not a real piano because its a very good synthesizer and it sounds just as good

do u know those songs? what songs should u choose .. i guess i should have it well rounded.. i was thinking moonlight sonata 3rd movement, either fantasie impromptu or revolutionary, claire de lune, and bach.. and maybe just for fun throw in 30 sec of the flight of the bumblebee just to show how fast i can play... do u think im doing the right thing? im trying to use popular songs as well as good ones

hmm... I think since the adcoms send the CDs to be reviewed by the respected departments (this is what I've heard) you would be well off submitting...

Fantasia and Fuga--Bach (is this the chromatic or c# minor?)
"Moonlight Sonata", Op.27, no.2, Mvt III/ Revolutionary Etude (which ever one you play better, since they are somewhat similar in tempi/ dynamics etc.)
maybe claire de lune.

I wouldn't send the flight of the bumblebee or the Fantasie Impromptu--they're just so overplayed. Same with claire de lune, but if you play it exceptionally well, then I'd include it.

If you play on a synthesizer I might include that info on the cover sheet when you write what songs you played etc.

It might also be better to record the entire song; this gives the adcoms the option of just listening to 2 minutes, or if they enjoy it they can listen to the whole thing--wouldn't want any raised eyebrows.

hope that helps

i'm sending some free jazz ****. do any of you play anything besides classical music?

man I love jazz. once I get into college I'll probably start the "conversion" if you will. my friend tells me it's a pain to go from classical to jazz, especially with the completely different sets of music theory.

some schools give u time limits though and they dont want it to be too long so im gonna have to cut parts of songs out

the transition Is hard. its not hard to learn licks and be able to fire them off well with classical upbringing. But once you try and start improvising on ur own, its hard to learn What to do

I'm not sure but I don't think it is supposed to be over a few minutes so I would probably limit it to one of two pieces.

you think submitting songs that i wrote will be a plus for me since it shows a part of who i am???
I have been actively playing acoustic guitar for quite some time and occasionally write my own songs...

any advice??? I'm afraid that since I am not like all-state guitarist or wutever that it may hurt my chances...

no i say go for it

MY recording went well, so I"m happy. I finished everything I needed to do in the time I had paid for at the recording studio (which cost a bundle, I must say). It was an amazing and nerve-racking experience at the same time, because you must get good takes of every part of the piece that you're playing, but somehow, on each new take, you make a new mistake! It took me somewhere from 7-10 takes to get the part played perfectly.

I'm glad it's over; I think it'll sound really good, and hopefully, it'll help ime in the Penn ED round.

Good luck to the rest of you;)
