Cell phones/computers

I am way ahead on this…

Is it better to bring your own cell phone or get one at Penn? When do we get info on what type of computer to bring? Any student discounts available?

Also, which is the student friendly bank?

Thanks to all who respond!

Bring your own cell phone - there's no reason to start a new contract or lose whatever discount you might have from a family package.

Any computer is fine. I would tend to lean toward a laptop - there is wifi in most (maybe all by now) libraries and study areas. Where there isn't there are CAT-5 hookups.

There are student discounts. If you have your PennKey check out
http://campusexpress.upenn.edu/index.jsp

The banks are all student friendly, but PNC seems to make more of an effort than Citizens. They all have branches basically on campus.

for a laptop, i would suggest one on the smaller side (less than 6lbs) if you plan to take it most places.

And I would suggest a Mac laptop as it does everything you need it to do in college (including MS Office), is well-supported by the University, and is immune to the nightmare of Windows viruses and hackers teeming on the Penn network (also immune to the regular spyware and crap you deal with anywhere).

It's also mighty affordable with the Penn discount.

Cingular is the only wireless company that actually gives you a discount on service if you are a Penn student. (VZW and Sprint do it for Penn employees/faculty, but that's not you)

My whole family gets 10% off our monthly Cingular bill because I'm a Penn student.

If you already have Cingular, you can call them and get the discount put on your plan.

Oh and Cingular's coverage is excellent too. Since Cingular service essentially gives you access to two wireless networks (Cingular's and what used to be AT&T's), the chances of running into a dead spot are nice and low. I've always got coverage on Penn's campus...more bars in more places ;-)

Thanks

This is great info that I couldn't find anywhere on the Penn website.

Oo damn. I just got an iMac G5 last summer, but now I feel like I should have a MacBook with the Intel chip. I wonder if I should invest in that. The thing is, I have NO way of getting money. How do Penn kids make money if they have the work-study thing.

Refer to the "work" in "work-study" ;-)

:-

I thought all of that went automatically towards your fees and tuition.

Beats me. I'm not work-study. I hold some little jobs but just for my own greedy needs

There are lots of workstudy "jobs" including community service options.

Well that's all fine and dandy, thanks for the link BTW, but will I have time to have a job to support myself (spending money) if I'm required to do this work-study job? My parents are very miserly people! :(

You should have tons of time. Many freshman take 4 academics and Wharton take 5.......so that leaves you mucho time to make some money and still have tons of free time. Let's think here: class, eat, sleep, work out, clubs, community service and you will still have time.

Wow. That seems like a life of awesomeness to me.

I have to make a post about wake-up times. When do you wake up, on average?

Early this semester for I have an early class: 9:30 but many semesters not before 11:00......it just depends on your class schedule. I hit the gym everyday and never call it a day before 1:30am. Does that help?

Wow.

Just. Wow.

A late opening in my school is 9:30. And for you that's early.

I think I'm in love.

Mac's are definitely one of the best if not the best computers...macs area very secure...you want a laptop for sure...powerbooks have some more power but ibooks are considered the ones students would typically get...plus every powerbook model is 500 dollars more than its ibook counterpart...you only need a powerbook if your gonna do like graphic designing or in depth movies or something like that. Now if you're really not down with getting a mac system and want somehting windows based...Sony Vaio's are the pest windows laptops hands down...you can get nice refurbished ones for a good price on ubid.com

pest was definitely supposed to be best

I'd get an iBook, (not only is it cheaper, it's more durable) but alas I want that Intel chip now.
