Central Campus Housing to be Phased out by Summer 2019

This article was just published in the Duke Chronicle a few days ago. Looks like the students who are living in the central campus apartments will be relocated.

For those of you not familiar with central, these are 1-2-3 bedroom apartments with their own kitchen and living area. The central campus was only meant to be a temporary solution, and it looks like the cost to repair the structures were more than simply building new ones.

Right now many SLGs and fraternities/sororities live on central. Although there is reliable bus service, the central campus is a bit of a hike from west (approx 1 mile). About 1000 students currently live in the apartments on central. So it will be interesting to see where these students will go. The Chronicle article mentions 300 Swift and The Hollows. 300 Swift is a residential apartment complex that Duke bought recently. Hollows is a new three building dorm that is going to be located near Edens quad on West campus.

Central has been long overdue for an overhaul, so this is great news. Hopefully it will be turned into graduate housing instead of more admin offices.

It’s about a 15 min walk, but cutting through the gardens makes it a nice walk.

Central always seemed to be among the less safe areas on the Duke campus to me. Plenty of break ins there.
