Chance a deferred Rice EDer!!

Well I didn't get into my first choice, Rice, and so now I am looking for similar schools that I might actually get into... I really want to get into a school that I'll be happy at and that gives good financial aid.. I would prefer a small school that has really good academics, but not a frat scene that will distract me. I don't care about any particular majors because I just want to get into med school for psychiatry. If you guys could give me any suggestions about places to apply, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm already applying to:
Georgetown
Brown
Wesleyan
Rochester
Dartmouth
Harvard
Cornell
WUSTL
Middlebury
Tufts
Chicago
Notre Dame
Vandy

I would love to get into any of these schools, but I'm feeling unsure... any ideas?

Or is my current list okay?

I’d say your current list is way too reach heavy. You don’t have a single safety Except perhaps Rochester, and most are major reaches.

There are dozens of LACs that would meet your needs. Do you have a preferred region?

I would prefer to live in either the Northeast or Cal… and I would prefer LAC’s that are high quality.

Look at Bowdoin, Colby, Bates, Colgate, Connecticut College, Vassar, Trinity, Occidental, Pitzer. I’d also add a bottom line state school safety.

I just looked at Trinity, as it was completely off my radar. It looks like a realy good safety fit for you. Stong science programs, good merit awards and a scholarship specific to STEM majors. Also, based on your activity list, it may be a better cultural fit than Wesleyan, Middlebury, Vassar etc.

I have “safeties”. I just didn’t include them on my list. I’m applying to UT, NYU Poly, Santa Clara, USC and Boston College as safeties…

Trinity might be pretty cool.
Do you think that Bowdoin, Bates, Colgate, Vassar, Occidental etc. would be safety/matches for me?
From what I’ve seen of them, they seem nice.

Wavylays94,

By my count you have already applied to 19 schools, with more on the way. You run the risk of looking like a “college tourist” to most of these schools. Although the applications are in, I suggest you pick two safeties and four reaches to focus on, ask for interviews at those schools, update your applications there, and regularly stay in touch with those admissions departments.

They would be matches, definitely not safeties.

No firsthand knowledge, but lots of posts about poor aid at NYU, so if that’s a concern, then you may want to rethink spending the time. “Boy from South” is a category that would add diversity at those New England LACs, but I’m thinking that the fit might not be a good as some other options. Colgate, I believe, disbanded their frats after serious issue; but my understanding is that there is still a frat-like social scene (perfectly happy to be corrected) in a fairly isolated environment where there aren’t that many other options.

*

???

Boston College, USC, and Santa Clara are not safeties for you. If you got deferred by Tulane, then these schools aren’t safeties.

What are your safeties…schools that you know that you’ll get accepted to and know that you can afford.

^Apparently these schools are safeties because I got in to all of them lol

And as far as “major reaches” goes, I got into Rochester, Middlebury and Tufts from the above list, and I have found that Middlebury is the school for me.
