Chance a junior?

Hi,

I'm would love to be chanced for Yale by people who have actually gone through the application process :)
Here are my stats:

Junior this year at a Newsweek top 20 school, USNWR top 10 school.
GPA: 4.0 Unweighted (our school does not assign weight)
ACT: 33 (retaking with hopes of a 34)
SAT IIs: Taking them in Math II, Bio, and Literature
State of Residency (if it helps): Michigan
Not a minority, but I like to consider myself a diverse person.

Class difficulty:
9th and 10th: All honors courses, all considered "pre-IB". I took AP Calc AB in 10th grade, received a 5.

11th: Full IB course load. 3 sciences: IB Bio, Chem and Physics. IB SL Math, IB Lit, IB History, IB Spanish, and TOK. Dual enrolled for a statistics class at a local university first semester.

12th: Courses will stay the same.

Academic Awards:
Top Science Award
Summa Cum Laude

ECs:

MUN club president, many awards in MUN

Spanish Honors Society (Officer)

NHS

Science Olympiad Officer (Experimental Design is so much fun!)

Youth Symphony (next year is my 5th year, I'm the principle horn player)

Volunteer Work

Student gov (secretary for three years)

100ish hours of volunteering at nursing home

Youth Leadership Project: Investigated problems related to poverty, hunger, and
homelessness on a local and international level for the course of the year. It was thought inspiring.

Will be attending TASP this summer (Telluride Association Summer Program for Juniors)

Also, I would have legacy status at Yale and I would be applying using Early Action.

Thank you!

i’m pretty sure you’re in. taspers have an abnormally high yale-acceptance rate, plus your legacy, plus the fact that you’re extremely qualified.

All of that sounds very good. It’s always a gamble. Do everything you can in the essays and recs, etc., and you’ll have as good a shot as possible.

you’re probably going to get in.

You’ve got very strong chances from the get go with legacy and tasp. Some issues/pointers to increase chances: I wonder why you haven’t taken SAT2 Math 2C yet and gotten 770+ with your 10th grade AP calc. Why not SAT if you’re not an ACT star? Isn’t score choice coming back? Why no other SAT2’s? I’d get working on those tests ASAP - there’s little time to retake if you screw up senior year.

Quite a bit may depend on whether we need a horn player. Are you good enough to be sending tapes, and are you?
It would be useful if you knew the difference between principle and principal intuitively and instinctively, as with all related grammar issues.
Some weight on how involved mom or pop is in the alum scene.

And a lot of weight on how diverse/unique you come off from the essays. Basically, I’d say you’re in if you removed any doubts as to your academic uniqueness with strong test scores across the board, with all 5’s on a lot of APs a major plus. Or, great essays that show a lot of personality. If neither, your chances are iffy. For most, that would be an AND. For you, an OR should be enough with legacy and tasp and general stength.

Also, you provided no details on recs. Those could shoot you in the foot if poorly planned.

Don’t listen to this garbage about needing a horn player or whatever. You have diverse interests (horn, science, MUN) which you have pursued in depth. You have strong academic credentials (although you should take the SAT; it is still the best test to distance yourself from other applicants). You have some nice side things going on (legacy, TASP, dual enrollment) that might help a little. If your essay doesn’t suck, you’re in. If your essay does suck, but you happen to be a girl, you’re in anyway, because your science credentials are unusual for female applicants.

You definitely have a better-than-decent chance.
Also, prepare to have the time of your life at TASP. Are you doing the one with physics at UMich? If so, ROCK ON.

Yale11, on what basis are you calling my commentary about being a horn player garbage? I seriously hope that you’re a member of YSO to be qualified to make an assertion like that. Otherwise, you run the risk of representing our school poorly with your shortsightedness.

In re: “If your essay doesn’t suck, you’re in. If your essay does suck, but you happen to be a girl, you’re in anyway, because your science credentials are unusual for female applicants.”
NOBODY is a shoo-in at Yale absent national distinction or a major donor for a parent. Your comments, therefore, are irresponsible by virtue of the risk of encouraging complacency.

Agreed. Besides, I hate how Yale takes in TASPers just because they went there. In your case, though, I think that if you raise your SAT/ACT score, you are DEFINITELY in, particularly b/c of legacy.

Um, contrary to popular belief, TASPers are not shoo-ins for Yale. There are three people from my TASP (myself included) going to Yale next year–but there were also five people who were rejected. We also have two kids going to community college for financial reasons.

The TASPers who get into Ivy League colleges get in because of how amazing they were before TASP–which is what got them into TASP in the first place. Correlation is not causation. Don’t perpetuate hateful myths plzkthnxbi.
