So, I'm super excited because a kid from my high school just got accepted to Harvard eeeeeepppp. Sadly for me though he is the most well rounded student you could possibly imagine. And well I might have gotten my hopes up. So the kid that got in is Full IB Diploma mostly A's, Executive member of SGA, Interact Club member, State champion wrestler, christian, and had amazing CAS and service hours. He also got the minority point and is lets say the stereotypical ivy prep boy. I am also in the Full IB Diploma program with a rigorous schedule. Next year will be my junior year, and I don't know if I will be able to make my app appear as well rounded. This year I have had a lot of trouble getting into the big clubs at my school and being elected for leadership roles and it is stressing me out. So far all I have under my belt is two honorable mentions at the Art Scholastics awards, hopefully great exam grades for Ap Art Hist. and Ap studio art, I'm a member of a small service club at my school because I didn't get into Key Club and now I don't even have a leadership role in that club, I ran for SGA Junior Class Vice President and just barely lost to a girl you bribed her way in with her epic baking skills. I plan on starting an Art club and being the Founder for my school, do fundraisers for art supplies and such, succeed in more art awards, and was also thinking about trying to get into Key Club next year. I am just worried about leader ship roles!! I know the key to extracurriculars is depth not breadth hence why a lot of mine are art based because I am passionate about art but I don't know if it is enough :/ I also have great plans for my CAS hours and I know my grades will be better next year although they are quite good. Any tips or ideas for more leadership? Do I have a well rounded app or do I need more?

Not a bad post. Not everyone can insult Christians, minorities and women in a single try. GL trying to get in. I suggest that you write your essay on losing to a girl who can bake.

I am christian so I mean it in the best way possible and where I live being as smart as this kid is and getting into Harvard is a huge deal and that might sadly be a good essay topic.

Okay, sosomenza, love the tongue-in-cheek, but let’s give 16yo or 17yo iberikar a break!

iberikar, you’re right: showing leadership is important when applying to competitive colleges. BUT, if you’re not naturally a leader (which is okay), it is hard to garner those positions. Think about your strengths and what you love and SHINE in those areas. If it’s art, think about how you could bring the art you love to others who might need or enjoy it.

Don’t set your heart on Harvard–you have a 94% chance of your heart being broken. Be sure to apply to a few matches and a few safeties.

And (please imagine me saying this in a very friendly tone), you might want to read up a little on “politically correct” speech and why it matters. Before you write your essays.
