Chance an Australian student for Ivies and more

Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate your thoughts on my chances for the following schools:
The Ivies, Stanford, MIT, UChicago, Duke, Amherst+Williams, NYU Stern, UC Berkeley, Georgetown McDonough and UMich Ross Pre-admit. (Yes I’m aware it’s a long list and I probably won’t apply to them all).

SAT: 2400 (one sitting)
SAT II: Chem 770, USH 760, going to sit Math level 2 and Japanese soon, I’m hoping for 800 in both, as they are my stronger subjects.

Extracurricular activities (High school starts in grade 10 here, and leadership positions are only available for 12th graders):
School string orchestra 9-12, chamber ensemble 10-12 (obtained a professional music diploma that technically makes me qualified to teach, but many people have this so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal).
Amnesty International 10-12, (elected President 12)
Model UN club 10-12 (founding member-not founder. Ran this club as a project undertaken in role as School Ambassador during grades 11-12)
Interned and debated at a tertiary MUN conference
Debating 11-12
Elected as Student Council Representative (12)
Participated in school language trip to Japan for two weeks in grade 10, one month exchange in summer of 11

Awards:
Prize (top 0.02% of competitors) in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)- 9,11 (equal 1st in my state in grade 9)
Gold award (there’s no medals) in the Australian Linguistics Olympiad- 11,12 (qualified for National Finals in grade 12, team came 12th in Nationals)
1st in a state wide Japanese speech contest sponsored by the Japanese consulate
Top 15 in state in national wide MUN competition (over 1600 students participate across Australia)- 11,12
Selected as one of 16 secondary students across Australia as a delegate on UN Youth Australia’s human rights tour to New Zealand, will debate in New Zealand’s largest MUN conference for high school students. Received material sponsorship from Federal Member for Parliament for a fundraising rafflel. This selection was done through a three round process involving long essays and interview, with hundreds of applicants across Australia.

I understand that it’s really hard to judge, especially for an international student, but should I apply?

Oh and I forgot to mention that I’m applying ED to the Huntsman Program in International Studies at Penn, with Wharton ED selected as well.

What’s your GPA?

Don’t do this to yourself, we are not the Adcom of any of those universities. You really show how qualified you are and what are your passions, so there is no problem on that. Now, consider your fit and reasons for going to each uni. Finally, don’t be a prestige hunter, I think they will know when you are one of them. Good luck and don’t forget to add other less selective universities just in case.

Everything looks good, but chances are tough to give out, especially for international students. My sources tell me that Ross is taking in MORE pre-admits (I heard they have a plan to make most Ross students admitted from high school instead after a year or two at another school/college at UofM) - so I guess that is good news for you. Definitely apply, and do not be afraid to matriculate to Michigan (if you feel like it is a great fit and everything) even without a Ross acceptance.

@thisisfine2020 I think my GPA would be around 3.9+ unweighted, but we don’t do GPA’s here in Australia. Our system is based on a percentage and my marks are predicted to be around top 0.5% of students graduating across Australia if that helps

@yikesyikesyikes thanks for your advice! Yeah I think I’ll apply EA to Ross Pre-admit, since it’s non binding. @Mrduque thanks- yeah I know this list is pretty tough, but I’ve got my safeties here in Australia.

I know the Huntsman Program LOVES International applicants. I applied to it as an American, and did not get in (unfortunately) but I do think you are a stronger applicant than I was. However, keep in mind that Penn is a selective school, with Wharton being even more selective and the Huntsman Program being even MORE selective. So it’s honestly a huge reach for anyone, but I hope you get it! Good luck.

As for the other ones, I don’t think your international status will help or hurt you to be honest (except for UMich which has to have a certain ratio of in-state students).

@IvyGirl27 Thanks for your input! I heard that the Huntsman Program takes about 40 students a year with half of them being internationals and half being American, so I’m looking at one of only twenty spots. I’m hoping that being Australian (although I’m Asian Australian) will help, since not many people apply to Penn around here (everyone is going for Harvard lol)

Definitely apply to Michigan! I got into Ross not as a pre-admit but if you were not an international you would have a good chance. So idk about international standards

@Silverkangaroo thanks for your input! I’m hoping that even if I don’t get Ross pre-admit, I’d be admitted into the college of literature, science and the arts and then get into Ross internally.
