Chance an int. from an unusual country AND get chanced back!

I've done a chance thread before but I've got my test scores now. Please chance me and give me some recommendations on my college list. I'll be able to apply to only about 10 schools so I need to prune my list significantly! I will chance back honestly and thoroughly.

If you had to only apply to 10:

Harvard

U of Penn

Yale

Princeton

Stanford

Dartmouth

U of Columbia

Safeties:

Lafayette

Hamilton C

Carleton C

Honestly, I think you have credentials to get into every single school, and I feel like you have a good shot at all of them. The only thing is that you have low income, and not all the schools in your list are need-blind to internationals, so you will have to consider that when applying. There’s no point in applying if you will have to pay 40k+ or some ridiculous sum like that every year.

I agree with the previous poster. Your stats are fantastic, but your needing financial aid is painful. Some people will think differently than I, but I think you should keep a handful of your top-choice reaches that you have, and then look for some schools lower down the line that offer guaranteed scholarships for academics beyond a certain threshold. That’s not a bad route to go, and you would clearly do well and would be set up nicely for grad school. Again, it’s not that you’re not qualified, it’s all because of the financial aid. Good luck!

Wow! Your stats are extremely impressive! I honestly think that even the Ivys will be a solid match for you; chances are that you will get into at least ONE of the Ivy’s you apply to.

However, I would like to note the inaccuracy of the posts before me. Your need of financial aid will NOT affect you negatively, because most schools these days are need-blind. If anything, the schools will be happy to have the ability to say that they’re paying a Mongolian kid with stats that impressive to attend their school, since it makes them look more diverse.

I think any college would like to have someone from as diverse a background as you, and in all likelihood most of these schools will accept you. Of course, HYPS are long shots for anyone, but most of the others should be no problem. Congrats!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/815089-johns-hopkins-ed-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks guys! Your advices were really helpful and encouraging. I’m applying to almost all schools that are need-blind to internationals so I hope my income won’t be much of an issue there. I’ll probably take away some mid-tier LACs from my list.

I’m trying to get as much feedback as possible so any other advice would be really helpful! Thanks!

You have an excellent chance at all those schools. Though you are an international, being from a country that may not be well represented at many of these schools can help you A LOT.

If anything, Pomona is a wonderful Ivy-like school that would love your SAT score, and I think you’d have a great chance there. They are a bit hard to get into, but I can see you being what they want. :)

You can chance back if you want. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816932-cha-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

you can obviously get into all of those schools, but ivies are probably what you’d worry most about.

the great thing is that they love diversity (mongolia), talent (multilingual), passion (translation), and you’ve got everything they want backed by some solid scores. i’d say you’re in at any school you want.

just think about financial aid though… look into scholarship opps for internats?

As everyone has said before, financial aid could be your biggest problem, as an international student. Otherwise, you scream Ivy: unbelievable boards, stand-out GPA, rigorous transcript, strong EC’s, and great hooks. Here are the schools I’d suggest:

You’re clearly looking for that liberal arts, small-campus feel, so I think these 10 would fit you best:

UPenn: Match-Reach

Columbia: Low Reach

Pomona: Safety-Match

Reed: Safety

Dartmouth: Low Reach

UChicago: Safety-Match

Carleton: Safety

Williams: Low Reach

Trinity: Safety (BIG International Community)

Colby: Safety

I think these 10 best represent your interests. Hope this helps!! Chance back (for whichever schools you can offer your opinion on; 2.0 thread)

Lafayette College offers a Marquis scholarship which you may qualify for. It’s on the website and every applicant is considered for it. It offers tuition paid for and the remainder of room and board covered by a zero interest loan due upon graduation. Other perks are included in the Marquis scholarship and it may be perfect for you. Best of luck with the applications!

bumper cars

I would definetly say (out of ten) #- acceptance #2- % aid

i agree with amr2014, upenn and columbia are better for international students because these colleges actively seek more students from aroudntthe world.
Here are the choices i would use:

Reed is a safety for nobody, not even a 1600/2400 4.0 UW, especially not for an international needing aid. Neither are Pomona, UChicago or Carleton. Before saying “safety” at least have a look at their Common Data Sets.

Yeah–I think a lot of times “safety” can be safely translated to mean “I don’t know anything about this school so it’s probably not that selective.” Not a very good way to make a judgment

Carleton is not need-blind to internationals, but they do have a handful of very competitive, full scholarships for international students. I think you would be a good candidate.

As far as trimming down your list…these schools are SO different that it’s hard to know what you’re looking for. Reed and Dartmouth are just about polar opposites in atmosphere, for one thing. UPenn has what, 10,000 undergrads? Compare that to Colby’s 1800 and the difference is huge.

If I HAD to group these schools:

Harvard, Yale, **Columbia University/b, Princeton, Stanford (grouping kind of goes without saying)

^Pick 2-4

Hamilton, Carleton, Amherst, Williams, Dartmouth and Reed (all more remote and very selective)

^Pick 2-4

Pomona, UChicago, UPenn (all pretty urban and very selective)

^Pick 1-2

Colby, Grinnell, Trinity, Lafayette (more remote and less selective, though still selective)

^Pick 2-3

If you tell us more about your preferences (urban/rural, size, atmosphere, etc.) we’d be more help in narrowing the list.

you seem like a good match for all of them good luck:)

Harvard - reach

U of Penn - reach

Yale - reach

Pomona - ?

Hamilton C - ?

Colby C - ?

Carleton C - ?

Amherst - match

Grinnel C - ?

U of Chicago - match

Reed C - ?

Princeton - reach

Stanford - reach

Dartmouth - reach

Trinity C - ?

Williams - ?

Lafayette - match

U of Columbia - reach

Reed isn’t that remote. It’s on the outskirts of one of the cooler cities in America: Portland, Oregon.

You guys were really helpful! Thanks. I just wanted to say that I have narrowed down my list to following schools.

 1. Amherst C
 2. Columbia U
 3. Dartmouth C
 4. Grinnell C
 5. Hamilton C (NY)
 6. Harvard C
 7. Pomona C
 8. Princeton U
 9. Stanford U
 10. U Chicago
 11. U Pennsylvania
 12. Yale U
 13. Reed C
