Chance and Match Me Please!!!

Ok i have to be honest my grades my first two years at one of the top public highschools in the country were very bad and i made A,B,C,and i failed a class. my GPA after my first 2 years was 2.5 which i know is very bad. So my dad tested me for LD's and they found out that i had severe ADD and i am on medication this year and i am making A's B's and one C. After looking at colleges i might apply to earlier this year me and my dad decided it would be in my best interest athletically and academically to take a post grad year then after we talked about for awhile we thought that it would be better if i just went for my senior year also but here are my stats:
GPA:2.6 now

PSAT:top 20% of my class in 19th public school in the country

Community Service:i have 180 Hours
Athletics:I swim, Play basketball, and Football,on varsity as a junior have received many letters from colleges about playing even got a call from the exeter coach last year

So i was hoping that maybe my athletic ability would help me get in

But i would be applying as a senior and then do a PG year, Please Match me or Chance me at any good boarding schools like Lawernceville(they recruited my dad out of highschool for football if that helps any, Andover, Blair, Deerfield) anything helps

also i got really good recs from my teachers

It sounds like you are planning to do your senior year and a PG year at the same prep school? I don’t think this is normally done. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is that the PG is nearly always at a different school that the one the student attended for 12th grade.

Have you considered repeating 11th grade? That would give you 2 years at the same school and then you could decide if you want the extra PG year later.

If you were my son, I’d look at the all boys schools as well. You will find a very high level of athletic play without the crushing academics of Andover, Deerfield and L’ville - but still VERY GOOD academics. I believe, (but you’ll have to check the websites), that Avon Old Farms and Salsbury also have support for students with ADD.

If you can afford it, it might be a good idea for you to seek the help of an educational consultant who could perhaps guide you to schools that would be willing to “forgive” those poor grades from 9th and 10th grade. But most importantly, he/she would be able to guide you to schools that you may not hear about on this board.

Best of luck to you. It sounds like you are very thoughtful in your approach. I don’t offer any kind of “chances” or “matches” for two reasons: I am not an admissions person and I don’t know you! :)

Thanks for the insight but if i were to repeat a grade would that help me get into a school like deerfield or Blair, also if i were to repeat could i still play sports my senior year?

If you were to repeat it would help you get into schools because generally the grade below accepts more people annually than the year above. I’d say try for lawrenceville, I’m being brutally honest here but I doubt exeter would accept you because they look at grades to determine both whether you can handle the workload there as well as what chances you have to matriculate to a good college so that their matriculation rates look impressive. I say go for lawrenceville because legacies count more than some think, perhaps you could ask your dad to call their (insert sport here) coach and get a meeting with him or her as well.

If you repeat a year, you can still play any sport you want. Lots of boarding schools recruit PG year for athletes.

Why not discuss repeating with the Blair football coach? I think he would give you a straightforward answer. In addition to football, they also have a great basketball team. The suggestion of repeating 11th grade above is a good one that you might consider.

Good luck!

Thanks Guys!!!

Definitely look at Trinity Pawling School. Good school (not top tier but still pretty good), all boys, and GREAT athletics. They also have support for kids with ADD if you should need it, along with PG. My brother went there and he really liked it.
