Chance at Cornell?

Hey, very interested in Cornell. Here are quick stats, not really interested in typing out crap like a lot of the other people I see on this forum.

-white
-Rigorous, well-known prep school
-Hard courses (also chinese honors, just mentioning cause I heard it looks pretty good)
-3.8 with freshmen year or 3.9 without freshmen
-school doesnt rank and doesnt weight either so I have no clue what I would be, but it would be up there
-sat shouldnt be a problem
-Activities focus on music - marching band, concert band, youth symphony, lessons, etc.
-Plan to focus my essay and such on music and I feel it can be very strong
-Will probably engage in research soon, am finalizing that
-plan to apply ED

I realize that's a pretty broad description, but try make a guess. I'm hoping with a high gpa, hard classes, and a focus spot for my activities, along with applying ED I can get into cornell but I'm asking what you think.

no mention of SATs? hmmm

oh its not that theyre bad but i havent taken yet, the score should be fine though maybe 2100 2200?

up we go…

The best advice my son got about Cornell was to read all the literature carefully so you know exactly what they’re looking for with respect to extracurricular, APs, gpa, etc. It’s also okay to contact Cornell with any specific questions you have about what they’re looking for. I also recommend visiting once or twice - spend some time there and sit in on a course. Also go to the admissions session specifically for the school you’re interested in. Showing this kind of attention to detail and interest will help your chances and also let you know if Cornell is the fit you’re looking for. Good luck!

Try and visit, and do everything you can to show interest.

As someone who was admitted to arts and sciences with a likely letter, I feel Cornell and values two things really highly, one being interest in the school itself, as many people who have a great shot at HYPS use it as a pseudo safety (because it’s not a real safety, but it’s no HYPS when it comes to admissions) and they want people who are truly interested in the school, not just getting into an Ivy, and two, your work ethic. As someone who had 10APs, worked all through high school, and played sports, got my eagle scout, did tons of service, and has had two internships this year, even though my GPA wasn’t fantastic, a 3.61 UW/94.9 W, I feel like they recognize that I’m a hard worker, and that numbers don’t say everything about you. I was rejected from Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Brown, but accepted to Cornell. Maybe it’s my GPA, maybe not, but the fact that I went to DHW last fall (and wrote my supplement essay about that, which I think sealed the deal) and showed I am a hard worker, is what got me into Cornell.

Work you butt off not only in school, but in everything you do outside of school, make good grades (don’t have to be the absolute best), and demonstrate a sincere interest in the school, and I think that’s what gets you in.

Your ethnic background isn’t the best, but if you can get an SAT score in what you’re predicting, I think you’ve got a good shot. I had a 2010SAT and 32ACT, but i’m a Native American so take that with a grain of salt (as well as the GPA thing).

All in all however, I think Cornell values fit and work ethic moreso than many other top schools. But that’s just been my experience.

go for atleast a 2200. itll be harder to get in if u got a lower sat score.
