Your volunteer activities and recommendations are strong but your ACT is on the low side for northwestern. And is your GPA weighted or unweighted?

Thanks Eightfold. This is my D’s stat:
GPA unweighted: 3.75
Weighted: 4.02
At the end of D’s 10 years in the underprivileged school district, D was ranked #1 and GPA was 4.87…but D wasn’t taught properly, and after she was transferred to a high ranking school district, she got “D’s” in AP classes (1st quarter grade).

Fortunately, D is a hard worker and managed to pull “B’s” and “A’s” at the end of her junior year. And this year, “A’s” in her first semester (senior year), in all her AP, Honors and Advanced classes.

Bottom line: D had to work hard to make up for what wasn’t taught at her former high school. D does well on all bigger concepts in AP science (that was how D got her recommendation letters from the two doctors), & AP Math but the basic rules and basic concepts were never taught to her at the previous school, and it really did a number on her grades.

I hate to break it to you, but your daughters ACT scores will likely be the reasons she gets ignored by the admissions committee. She may be well rounded otherwise, but there is certainly a requirement that must be met there.

Thanks Majman. You might be right. Low ACT score…but I met a young woman who was accepted into Northwestern. Her ACT score? 26. Her major? Spanish.

Hoping, praying, crossing fingers and legs… :)

Yes, that’s true…you never know. Here’s wishing you good luck.

Good luck and hope all goes well.

Thank you NorthwesternDad and Eightfold.

26 is very low for an ACT score. To be brutally frank, that would put that individual in the bottom 2-3% of the incoming class from a purely quantitative standpoint. Sure these instances do obviously happen, as there is of course a variance from the mean. But from what you are interested in, the number of these cases are very, very low unfortunately.

Thanks Majman.

I think she’d have a chance if she got that ACT/SAT up. I did a lot better on the SAT than I did on the ACT (1500ish vs. 30).

thanks Wildcat2016
