My D applied to UMTC (CLA) so we looked into the stats pretty thoroughly and I spoke to D’s high school counselor about her prospects. I’m happy to share what she told me regarding admission to CLA. (Her second choice is C-DES which is less competitive so we didn’t worry about that so much).

Like you, D has a high ACT (33), a GPA of 3.4 (UW) with a strong upward trend, lots of honors/AP, and various EC’s/volunteer work on her resume. She is also in-state. Her HS counselor informed me that the upward trend was a very good sign and that the admissions committee will pay attention to that piece of information. Also, that if we had any worries about her admission prospects to have one of her teachers write a strong rec. letter verifying that her academic progress is continuing. When I asked her, she told me that the admissions committee WILL consider that supplemental piece. D’s HS has a very strong history of UMTC admissions so the counselors hopefully know what they are talking about! She did think that D’s stats were sufficient for admission to CLA but I suppose the caveat is that we don’t know how strong this year’s pool of applicants is. You might speak to your HS counselor to see if he/she has any perspective regarding your particular case.

I was also curious as to whether it’s possible to major in “CSE” type subjects while in CLA and it is! Check out the list of CLA majors which includes comp. sci. and math: http://cla.umn.edu/departments/majors.php Your degree would be a BA rather than a BS and the focus might be a bit less quantitative.

I wish I had info. to share about CSE but D isn’t looking there. Check out other threads on CC because I’ve seen lots of posts regarding admission to CSE. It’s definitely one of the most competitive of the colleges. The university’s overall admission rate is 44% and CSE has to be well below that.

One more thing - apply EARLY due to the rolling admissions - that’s probably the best thing you can do right now to increase your chances of admission. The HS counselors have told us that admissions prospects really drop after that Dec. 15 priority deadline. Don’t wait - it’s an easy application to fill out. No essay or recommendations are required (although as mentioned above you can always submit a rec. if you think it will help . . . ). You will provide your course list for this year so anything you are planning to take will be considered. There is also a part for sharing anything that isn’t already on the application so room for a short personal statement of some sort.

Minnstudent,
I’m currently in CSE and personally I think you have an OK chance of getting in (you’ll easily get into CLA because of your act). In my opinion the most important aspect they look at us course history (which yours is intensive) and then act. But, they also care a lot about class rank. And I will venture an assumption that your 3.4 is not in the top 15% of your school. That will hurt a lot when it comes to CSE, and I personally don’t know any undergrads who had a 3.4 uw.

I think you’ll easily get into CLA. For CSE, 3.4 sounds a little too low, even with an upward trend 32 is a little bit above CSE’s average. And remember you only transfer to your major in CSE, so transferring from CLA to CSE after your freshman year might sound easier, but it probably depends on what you’re coursework for freshman year will be.

Also, though your extracurriculars are really good, I don’t really think UMN will factor heavily with that. Good luck, though.

Can you please clarify this?
"And remember you only transfer to your major in CSE, so transferring from CLA to CSE after your freshman year might sound easier.’
Is this saying that a CLA BA Comp. Science (Physics etc.) major would transfer to the BS degree but still be listed as CLA?

or is it that the qualifications for the specific major only have to be met, not for the entire CSE?

Sorry for the late reply, but if I understand your question, the BA degree would be listed as CLA unless you complete an application and successfully transfer to CSE and complete a BS degree there.
