First, my relevant information:
GPA: ~3.9ish? (could be lower--we don't use the 4.0 scale)
SAT I: 2400
SAT II: Math 2- 800, Physics- 800, Biology- 780, U.S. History- 770
APs: 11 5's (relevant tests: Calc AB, BC, Computer Science A, AB, Statistics, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: E+M), Spanish: 4, Euro: 3
Extra stuff: expecting 2-3 publications (research) by end of '09 in computer science (NOT math)
EC's are strong, but they don't really matter in this case.
Very strong math background.
Now:
1. I know Cambridge takes a ridiculously low (I heard they took 6 last year) amount of students from the US: is applying for Mathematics any more competitive than the mean? (i.e., do I at least have a reasonable shot?)
2. Will I have a better chance applying for Computer Science rather than Mathematics? I've got a clearly demonstrable passion for both (as in: don't worry about the personal statement in that regard), but I'd rather go math than cs (cs people are weird); however, my resume is probably significantly stronger in cs than in math.

OK, I don’t know how the English school system works, but I just talked to my friend who lived in England for a while about applying to Oxford…I’m not going to. Anyways, he said that there are completely different standardized tests that US students have to take to go to an English university, not the SAT’s, although I’m guessing (just a guess) that they could convert the SAT to whatever they use. I would do some research on what they require, but if you do what they require, I’d say that you are a very strong applicant for any school, but six from the US is very small, and I’m guessing that it would be VERY VERY competitive. I’m not saying that you don’t have a shot, it will just be a very small chance. Congrats on the research, that will definitely make you stand out and raise your chances.

Did you qualify for USAMO?

Nope, I’ve topped out at AIME–contest math hasn’t been my strongest point. Not that it matters, but I’m hoping this year I’ll make it.

Anyway, does anyone have any specific input on either question? The app’s due there by the 20th but I figured I’d might as well get some information while I have the chance.
Really, anything about the application process to Cambridge from the US that’s not been said before would be appreciated–if not for me then for next year’s applicants.

bump bump bump

No-one is going to answer this thread since if you search the boards everything has been said before. You ask for advice but then say you don’t want it.

Certainly it’s not too much to assume that the only reason I’m posting this (note that these are my only posts here) is because I haven’t found quite enough information on here, no?
And I disagree with your note, but that’s immaterial.
I just want information, basically. The nuances of the admissions processes for Harvard, Yale, etc. have been very thoroughly discussed here, but in the case of that of Cambridge there has been no such discussion. Therefore, consider this an attempt to start such a discussion.

You should check out “The student room”. That has much more info on the uk university process.

I think you have a pretty good shot. And I think a tad more than 6 Americans got accepted. You should try their website or look through some more forums. Sorry I saw a post like this a while back but I don’t have the link

Sorry im not that helpful xD
