Hi,
I have a unique situation going on for me. My GPA after junior year was a 3.32 UW and a 3.78 W because I failed (as in F (failed) a really high level math class. However, I got a 2340 (770 M 770 W 800 R) on my SAT and 800s (Math, Physics, Chem) on all 3 of my subject tests and have taken 7 AP classes and all honors class without getting lower than a B before this math class. For the first part of my senior year I have about a 3.9 weighted and 4.6 UW and I retook the failed math class but it did not replace the F on my transcript
My extracurriculars are:
Eagle Scout
National Merit
Founder of Cancer Charity raised over 10,000 dollars.
5-6 Good Business Awards
Members of Various Clubs, like mock trial, school news paper
3 years of soccer and 2 years track and probably couple of others I am forgetting.
3 Internships at Venture Backed-Tech companies and some fairly large financial corporations
Over 2500 Community Service Hours
I am an Asian male in California go to competitive public school and have stellar essays and recs.
I was wondering if I could be chanced for these schools and if there was any advice I could get to improve my chances
NYU Stern (EDII)
Vanderbiltdt
Emory Goizueta(RD)
Penn State Smeal
Rutgers Business School

Carnegie Mellon Business(RD)
Michigan LSA (RD)
Boston College Carroll (RD)
UCLA
Georgetown McDonough
John Hopkins (RD)

I really don’t think you should be too worried. Clearly you have a solid sat score and awesome sat iiand your gpa is otherwise great for the caliber schools you are applying to. EC are nice as well; not outstanding but definitely won’t hurt you.
Don’t be worried; at least I wouldn’t
Also, don’t try to hide it. Idk if u want to bring up the pour if asked about it, and I don’t know your specific situation with the class, but clearly it was a one time fluke and it did not stop you from achieving thereafter and ending on a high note
Best of luck

Don’t want to list every school, but I don’t think u have to worry about any if them as being out of your league. Clearly some are harder to get into than others, but overall appear to be good choices!

Chance back please!?!?

NYU Stern (EDII) and Tepper CMU, Ross Michigan: Reach

-They want kids to be good at high level quantitative classes such as BC Calc, Multi var etc… as well as high sats (which u have), but that F in math seems pretty detrimental to any business school
Michigan LSA- match
Vanderbiltdt- high match
Emory Goizueta(RD)- match
Penn State Smeal- low match/safety
Rutgers Business School-safety
Maryland-safety
Boston College Carroll (RD)- match/high match
UCLA- high match
Georgetown McDonough- low reach
John Hopkins (RD)- low reach

bump 10char

bump 10char

if you explain the f then I think schools will understand, i think michigan should be a high match, did you apply early action? results come back in two weeks!

bump again?

any other opinions?

Your SAT is amazing, but the F is a pretty bad mark on your app. If you could explain it away in an essay or in the additional comments section of your app I think that’d help a lot. You have a ton of CS and pretty solid ECs, but I really don’t know how to account for that F. If you didn’t have the F, I’d say you were pretty solid.
As it is, I’d say you’re a high match/low reach (more like a high match, though) for UCLA; I’m not sure about the other colleges.
So long as the colleges don’t explicitly say something about Fs (they might, I know some look for Ds/Fs on apps), I think you’re good…

any other opinions? will chance back.

@stjohnson is very right about the F; you probably won’t get into any of these top schools. There should be no reason why you fail a math class lol its one thing to get a C or D, but getting an F…

try applying to state schools and then transfeering out with good, non-failing grades. You’ll be guarenteed into any of the top schools

Also what is your schools’ grading system? If you can get a 4.6, then you’re GPA is even more lacking then it first appears

@UCDreamer freshman and sophomore years really restricted by classes you can take. Usually valedictorian graduates with around a 4.4-4.5. The class I failed was beyond calc bc level just for clarification but yeah your probably right.

i took bc calc in school during my sophomore year so i likely took whatever you took also; to be quite frank, i think bc was by far the hardest class lol

all are matches or low reaches except for john hopkins
congrats on test scores though
i have a similar situation chance me please
