i’m not going to get too specific but in addition to a course at the college, there’s a section about creating original research and publishing, and i worked to basically teach part of that portion as well as interact more directly with students, (since COVID this was actually really easy) so some of the theory behind it, some math stuff, teaching software, and how to do posters/paper writing plus auditing alot of stuff. prof of the overarching class doesn’t really have too much time so i basically answered all the questions and guided them through most of the project. also work with the prof on creating material so whatever that semi ambiguous role would be called.
sorry for the vauge wording i’m still not sure what exactly to call it, as in the overarching colleege course, the research section is called its own course, i think its like mandatory and like much shorter htan an actual course, but referred to as it’s own course. and i have a (in my opinion) decently significant role in that part, so thats why i used the word “course” and “taught” but if I should change that please let me know!
I think that an AO seeing a claim that a student in Grade 10 or 11 taught a college course is going to have a lot of questions -and be very skeptical. I think that an AO seeing a student say that they 'acted as a teaching assistant for my [name of course you took with him] teacher for [name of module/course], including [2-3 very specific tasks], will see an advanced student whose prof sees both academic and personal maturity,
@nineteentwenty seems to be aware of the fact that they need to provide legitimacy to back up what might seem like outlandish EC.
While they have developed relationships outside of school, they have weaker relationships with those who can write LOR from within the school. They are a junior so have a little time to develop those relationships.
I would schedule at least a couple of meetings with the counselor who will write your LOR. The first meeting should be to discuss which schools you would like to apply to. You counselor will probably ask some of the questions that were posed in this thread (how you developed the list, who is going to write your LOR, what have you done outside of school, etc). You may need a second meeting to explain all that you have done outside of the classroom so take the counselor’s recommendations on your list, narrow it down and schedule a second meeting where you can discuss this further. These meetings will help the counselor get to know you which will be helpful both for your applications as well as for the counselor’s LOR.
This. Most schools will require at minimum 18 graduate credit hours in the subject area being taught in order to be listed as instructor of record (for instance, SACS accreditation requires this). A guest lecturer or teaching assistant would be a better way to phrase what you are describing.
Your publication/research/conference experience is very impressive for your age, and you will be a great candidate at many schools. Make sure your school counselor has a good understanding of these accomplishments so they can speak to them accurately in their rec letter.
Since you’re interested in Duke, look into the Robertson Scholars program, which would also give you access to UNC resources, too.
Assuming your profile is accurate… I have met a few fibbers on here - I like you as an applicant. MY QUOTE FROM A WHILE BACK.
If you were hired as a TA, I would use that. If you were not, think again. That holds meaning, too. If you are perceived as an exaggerator, that might kill your admissions odds.
Hmm what would be safe to call it? I was never really given an official title or anything (and i’m not too familiar with all of this), I spelled out my duties above so I’m unsure of what exactly would be an accurate term?
I’ve been applying for summer camps by just explaining what I did without really a term for it, is this fine for apps?
And yep your quote from a while back was on my mind as I’ve tried to describe everything without really overstating things but accidentally did for this and don’t want to be perceived as such haha.
