Chance me? And other questions.

Going to attempt to keep this nice and short as long threads usually get ignored. 8th grade I was in the Gwinnett County "Gifted" Program, where you would learn things more advanced than regular 8th graders. I got kicked out of school for a simple "fight" instead of 3 Days OSS just because it happened in the last month of school, May. I ended up having to go to a alternative school for my entire freshman year, where they didn't have the "Gifted" program, so the entire 9th grade was a review of what I learned in the 8th grade. This is where I lost hope as I basically ruined my chance at having all Honors/AP classes freshman year if I had never got kicked out. I didn't do too great that as the environment to learn was horrible, there were a bunch of delinquents, so I got A's, B's, and 2 C's while there. Not trying to bash the school, but just trying to sum it up. When I returned to regular public education sophomore year, I had come back with a really bad attitude and negative look on things. I had no honor/ap classes and on top of that I had to be put in 1 freshman class as the social studies class (World Geography) was not accepted at my new school. I didn't take anything seriously as I thought even if I had a chance at college I would never be able to afford it (only having a single mother with 2 children, and she is earning less than minimum wage as she WAS a illegal for most of my childhood). I got A's, B's, and more C's sophomore year. Now that it is junior year and I finally realized I could get financial aid, I have been trying my very hardest. Currently got all A's with EASE, I finish my classwork 10-20 minutes before anyone else and am forced to just sit there either reviewing stuff, or help others. Not trying to brag or anything as I think my GPA is mediocre.

1)What are my chances that I get into Georgia Tech if I were to get all A's my Junior year and Senior year?

2)What is the highest GPA still possible for me with my current grades? Right now I have it calculated at 3.4 using this formula (2.8+2.8+4.0+4.0)/4

3)With summer school costing $225 per class, would it be recommend to retake the classes I got a 70 in? I would pay for it myself if it were to increase my chances to get in with a higher GPA, and wouldn't look bad that I went back and retook them simply for the grade. I KNOW and understand the material just never applied myself in the classes.

4)With my mother only gaining $14-15k a year, not including what she gets from taxes, and instate tuition at Georgia Tech being $10k (need to find exact price), what can I expect to pay if I were to get financial aid?

5)What are some good back-ups? My entire plan as of right now if to go to GT, major in BME or something similar, and depending on my grades after 4 years, maybe attempt to get into medical school at Emory. And should I get denied, I would still have a degree in BME or something similar. I live 30 minutes away (driving) from both schools, so I could most likely afford to go to college if I worked and didn't live on campus but at home. (Emory would be a different story)

6)I read GT must take in two-thirds of instate applicants, is that true? And would that help my chances? Also does being Hispanic help at ALL? Not trying to play the whole race card in my situation, but if it helps why not?

7)Random: Does anyone know if in high-school you are allowed to NOT have a lunch period? I don't even eat at school simply because the food upsets my stomach too easily, so I resort to just going to the media center to read a computer science book. Would much rather take a class in that time, so it is not "wasted".

8)If I were to retake the classes with C's, would the grade I get in summer school be my new grade in that class or would it be the average of my first grade and new grade?

9)Which EC activities should I attempt to get into? I can stay after school/come in early, but I can't possibly do community service hours. Not because I don't WANT to, but I simply CAN'T. I know you can take any one your school offers, but I would like to get evolved in activities that wouldn't be overlooked as the simplest ones/easy route.

10)Can I come off as improved to Georgia Tech? I know I won't come off as a excellent student throughout my entire highschool years. But if my grades showed I went from being a under-achiever to straight A's in my final 2 years, would I be noticed?

PLEASE don't feel forced to answer all questions or ANY, I don't mind people answering a couple questions or even one question. Sorry if I came off as cocky/rude/lazy. And I am very aware I made VERY poor decisions. I think about it everyday once I finish with my classwork and sometimes just sit there waiting for class to be over.

Criticism is WELCOME if you simply don't want to give me answers. I would like feedback to see how I can improve myself even more.

Note: I plan to ask to be moved up to Honors for most of my classes. And after Junior year, I will drop french and take a AP class. Also I would like to add I have already begun studying/reviewing for the SAT and ACT for 2-3 hours a day. If my GPA doesn't get me in my test scores should right?

Here’s what I would do. Check what your hope GPA is on georgia411. Work hard on bringing your current grades up. Try and end up graduating with a hope GPA of 3.0 so you can get the hope scholarship. Look into other colleges that offer the Regents’ Engineering Transfer Program (RETP). I think you will have a better chance of getting into one of those colleges. Then after 2 years if you keep your grades up and complete all the required classes you can transfer to GT.

Completely agree with MichiganGeorgia, look into the RETP program, and focus on qualifying for the hope scholarship while preparing yourself for college level work. This will also help keep your debt low (Georgia Perimeter College tuition is $3K a year? vs. GT at $10K), something you want to do if you’re thinking about med school.

Going this route doesn’t require perfect grades, so taking AP/Honor clases and getting B’s are fine, as they are preparing you for college (and with the AP clases, saving you $ and time).

Good Luck!
