Chance me and suggestions for my school list. Also looking for safeties/ targets that offer generous aid

Columbia and Pitt

Well, Taiwanese national curriculum I think.
My budget I think it’s around 8-10k max/year.(up to 8k family contribution, 2-3k loan)
All students in Taiwan need to take a standardized test after middle school to enter high school. I’d say it’s pretty selective, most students in my school were like 92-95th percentile nationwide on that exam.
And it’s like >98%I think go to 4-year colleges after graduation. (there are no 2-year colleges in Taiwan.

Yup, I’ve heard people saying that(the standalized test part) before. Well, I think I’m kinda bilingual, like both Mandarin and English is my first language I think. But my is English just not that good cos I don’t actually have chances to use it in everyday life. I’ve never thought of ACT cos I’ve heard it’s computer-based right? I don’t really like the feeling of taking tests on computers. It’s just weird. I might take a look since its English section is easier and I don’t think science and math would be a problem for me.

My school definitely offers English transcripts which use GPA, I just haven’t applied for one yet. (Haven’t finished this semester, so it’s still no available. ) I don’t really think the transcript would be a problem for me. As to rigor, lots of students who attend public High Schools in Taiwan have applied to colleges in the States. since every public high school in Taiwan basically follows a similar curriculum, I don’t think it would be a big problem either. I’ll also discuss this with my counselor.

Okay. I’ll check that. (Umich)

I’ll consider Tufts as a reach and maybe northeastern as a match. TBH I don’t really like NEU tho.

Personally, I prefer midsized schools( like 5-10k students)
One thing that makes me hesitant about LACs it’s is diversity. I think it’s kinda hard to find people who share a common background with me there.

I’m actually not sure how to decide whether to submit test scores to test-optional schools?

About math level, I don’t really know how to say actually. School hasn’t told us about next year either. I’m taking calculus, and pre-calc (3-dimensional algebra, 3-dimensional vertex, matrices, and conic sections this year. )Next year would be more calculus-focused I think.

I’ll discuss with my consular about the transcript. Actually, I don’t think it would be a problem. My school offers English transcripts, I just haven’t applied for one cos the semester hasn’t finished yet. My school profile indicated how selective my school is and how rigorous the courses are.

I think they suspended plans to administer the ACT via computer. It’s still in person.

The science section is really data interpretation. You can do a few sections for practice, and once you’re familiar with all their ways of presenting data, you’ll do well. The best way to prepare for it is to simply do sections from retired ACTs, which are legally released and in the public domain. You can find them by googling. Reddit has an entire section on ACT prep.

The ACT is computer based at ex-US locations.

Are there any differences in the test itself, or is it simply that you click on a bubble, rather than shading it in with a #2 pencil?

Same content and scoring, and one clicks on the answer bubble. I am sure the ACT site has greater detail. FWIW, I am beginning to wonder if computer based ACTs, or computer based section re-testing will ever be a thing in the US…my kids’ HS (large affluent public) has told ACT they don’t have the computers or tech to offer these tests at their site. Pre-pandemic this site typically offers 600 or so seats per test date, and if a large affluent site won’t offer CB tests, I wonder if there would be enough sites offering seats to make it possible.

So, you’re attending a selective prep school that’s known for its academic performance and sends students abroad regularly. You’re in a very good position academically.
Truman state would be a safety and could be affordable.
Colleges like Muhlenberg, St Olaf, Dickinson, Denison, are smaller than your optimal size but meet need for those they admit. Dickinson is very international, St Olaf and Denison also to a certain extent. They’d all be matches.
