Chance me (Applying to UPENN, Georgetown, Cornell, JHU, NYU, Rice, UMD, Dartmouth, and Brown)

By the way, the reason I say that I may need financial aid is because my parents are retired. My family has a net worth of 1 mil+, so finances are not an issue. I have visited all of each of my propective college’s campuses and I love the atmosphere of them all!!! Also, I am applying to two safety schools: UMD and UVA. Also considering my strong academic profile; most of the schools that I have listed are NOT reaches. I already got done 300 SSL hours over the past few months and I think that 500 SSL hours is a fully attainable goal. By the way thanks for all the help!!!

Yet another thread where a student comes asking for opinions, then refutes them all because he knows better. Good luck.

@UndergradNot, not to beat a dead horse, but please don’t check the “black” box if you only discovered that through a DNA test. It sounds as if you were raised as, and are predominantly, Asian. Take pride in your heritage. In yourself.

@suzy100 exactly.

A couple of things need to be said…

  1. please do not say that you are African American on your application. As said above, chances are that most people are around 2% African Amercan. The only people that actually put it in their apps are either half, full, or predominantly black (or people that culturally identify with it). I’m 1/8 Native American, but it would just be rediculous to put that on my app. I’m sorry to say this, but to AdComs, you’re going to be classified as Asian.

  2. The fact that you’re just going to apply to the top 20 schools and a couple safeties shows your ineptness at research. Find out which of the top 20 schools would actually be a good fit for you. Don’t say that they’re all a good fit; the truth is they aren’t. There are huge differences even in the top 20 colleges; there’s no way that one student will enjoy his hypothetical experience at all 20 equally. You’re still stuck on the name of the school; throw that concept away.

Do some more research and be yourself in your application. Don’t mention your black/ white heritage because without a DNA test, you wouldn’t even have known. Mentioning it would make your application feel stretched and untruthful. Also, applying to 20 something colleges means that you will have a multitude of essays to write and questions to answer. Just keep that in mind.

  1. I lived in a ghetto neighborhood for most of my life. I have identified with black culture for most of my life. I have suspected that I was part black; a DNA test safely confirmed my suspicions.

  2. I have visited all of the schools (27) and have spent time talking to the students and listening to the lectures of the schools’ respective professors. I can safely say I am well suited for all of the schools I am applying to. Fyi: I don’t care about the name or reputation of the school. I just care about the quality of education and how the school is perceived in the eyes of employers (In finance; the school you go to matters tremendously).

I am proud of my multi-cultural heritage and I am tired of people classifying me as “Asian”. What is wrong with being bi-racial???

@ap012199 @supercilious @suzy100

There’s nothing wrong with being multiracial, but the problem is that by your definition of “multiracial,” almost every single person applying to college would be multiracial. You can say that you are in your apps, but IT WILL BACKFIRE.

If you want to apply to 27 colleges and have the time and money to do so, go ahead. But, as a forewarning, colleges can tell when an applicant is applying to many schools due to the lack of quality in an application (due to lack of time). If you truly have the time, it wouldn’t be a hindrance.

Also, I’m not sure what you mean by “ghetto neighborhood” if your family’s net worth is 1 million + dollars…

@ap012199

  1. All of my official test documents in addition to my high school transcript lists my race as “multiracial”.

  2. I have narrowed my choices done to 10 schools with 2 safeties (Emory, Georgetown, Tufts, Rice, JHU, Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Duke ) Safety: (UVA and UMD)

  3. I lived in a ghetto neighborhood for 5 years (my parents choose the place because it was closer to where they work); since then we have moved into a neighborhood where the average house price is 2 mil. As I said, money isn’t a problem.

If you are sure about finance as your intended major I would also like to encourage you to apply to schools like Babson and Bentley University - both are highly regarded /excellent schools for business (only); your stats are in the top range for those schools so I think you would get lots of merit money and you won’t have to do any more volunteer hours or contest awards etc…

Hahahaha UVA is not a safety

Something I realized through my, so far, three years of high school is that SO MANY people have the same stats that I do, that you do. That so many students do things with “college” being their only reason. You’ll get into a good school. I dislike these “chancing” threads because basically, you can get in, but you might not. With the more selective schools it’s like a toss up. Just be realistic with yourself, and do things with passion because then that passion shows through the written portion of the app (like essays) and that’s what colleges want to see.

I wouldn’t be comfortable going to retirement with 1M+

I don’t think you’re understanding how competitive the schools are your list are. No matter how academically qualified you think you are, there are many people who have have great academic stats that get waitlisted or rejected from these schools. You need to get your head out of the idea of rankings and find schools that you actually like for more than being in the top 20.

Being a black woman myself, l am very insulted by the fact that you identify as mixed because a DNA test told you so… I highly doubt that you go around school or around your family saying you identify as both Asian and African American. No, you’re not 100% Asian, but most people are not 100% anything, so I don’t really understand why you’re getting insulted by that. The fact that you’re going around calling your neighborhood “the ghetto” is messed up because no one who lives in “the ghetto” would use that term. If you can’t even remember which of your family members was in the 2% without looking it up on ancestery.com, then you shouldn’t identify with it. Its wrong in both the college app and regular worlds.

Hope you can get your list together so we don’t see you in a year not accepted into anywhere but a school you hate.

UVA is a match, not a safety, due to selectivity/acceptance rates.
UMD is a safety and the Honors College is a pretty sure bet.
I’d add two more schools (one another match and one another safety), for a total of 12.
What about URichmond or Babson for a match, and either CNU & its President’s Leadership program or Bentley for a safety? And for all your matches and safeties, dutifully fill out the “request info” form, etc.

If you’ve been considered biracial/bicultural your whole life, there’s no problem. Being Asian and African American is something to be proud of too. However it has to be something that’s part of you. How did you come to ask for a DNA test? Did you suspect you may have a Black father or grandparent because of specific physical traits, for instance? Please understand that if you arrive on campus for the diversity fly in or when you arrive for the minority orientation program your adviser registered you for… and there’s suspicion, you can be rescinded. You seem sure of your heritage, and it’s good you’re proud of it, but some people here feel insulted because what you say MIGHT be manufactured. Only you know what’s what.

I 100% agree with @DisneyAlways
