You are in the possible range for all those schools. The only ones who can give you a realistic assessment of your chances are the members of the admissions committees at those schools, and then only when they have your complete application package in front of them.

This message is MIT-specific, but the principle applies to all selective colleges:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/10581800-post1.html

Your ACT is good for Northwestern, but your GPA is gonna make it very hard for you to get in.

Your upward trend will look good, but at Northwestern you will be in the lower end of the applicant pool. Your chances at Michigan and UGA are better, probably around a match. GW is a low reach and Northwestern is probably a high reach. You could still get a job as a tutor, but what matters most for you now is the essay.

Hi

if you have a 3.6 after six semesters, you probably had about a 3.7 going into Junior year. So the bad semester hurt your GPA a bit, but not tremendously. (This surprised me a bit, but the math is probably good) Do you know your class rank? Top 15%, but not top 10% (kind of a guess here – since grading systems are tough to decipher).

Is there a specific reason for the bad semester? If so, make sure the schools know about it.

The thread cited above (MIT admissions) is probably the best thread ever on CC, talking about holistic admissions processes. The bottom line, if these are your dream schools, apply.

Now – with respect to your stats. Let’s pretend that we know that the ‘average Northwestern student has a 3.85 GPA’ (I’m making this up, but I’m probably pretty close.) So, does that mean you’re below the average? If so, how much?

Answer – I don’t really know. If you go to a school that has a reputation for being a hard grading school, maybe you’re only a little below average. If your school has a reputation for being an easy grader, you’re probably a lot below average. Without knowing more about the nitty gritty of NU’s admissions process, and a whole lot more about your HS, we really can’t answer that.

So, now that I’ve admitted that I really don’t know enough to give you a valuable opinion, I’ll share anyway.

You should apply to all four schools if they’re your top choices.

Your ACT is competitive at any of them. Your ECs look nice – the 4th place in a statewide competition is an achievment, and the rest tells a story of commitment and dedication.

With good recs and good essays, you at least have a chance at any of them. It’s worth the application.

Looking at the #'s – I think you’d have an excellent shot at UG. A reasonable shot at GW. NU is probably a reach, but still worth an application. Michigan is harder to gauge right now, they first adopted Common App last year, and their admissions percentages fell tremendously. Perhaps somewhere in the GW range?? GW and NU, btw are unpredictable (it’s that holistic application thang), in their admissions processes, btw (meaning students whose stats look to be below averages, are admitted all the time).

PS – 16 and a College Senior – means you probably skipped a grade somewhere along the way. Discuss this with your GC, you may want to call it to their attention.
