Chance me at Stanford, the Ivy League, Claremont-McKenna and UCB

Here’s my applicant profile:

  • 4.0 UW Cumulative GPA, full IB Diploma candidate (all IB/AP classes since junior year)
  • Scored 5s on all 5 APs taken, 6 on IB SL Art
  • SAT 1530 (single-sit highest 1510) ACT 34 (single-sit highest 33)
  • Planning on taking SAT II History and Lit
  • Senior year course load is standard IB (HL Euro, HL Bio, HL English, SL French, TOK) as well as AP Stats/SL Math
  • ECs include president of Model UN club (10-12); president of school NHS chapter (11-12); student gov't assemblies chair (9); Creative Writing Club (10-12); Future Problem Solvers (9-10); 1 year debate (congressional)
  • Honors/awards include:
    • Utah High School MUN Superior Delegate Award, position paper award
    • 2nd place French Culture Bowl team at state French Language Fair 2 years in a row, as well as honorable mention in French poetry recitation and 1st prize in Level 2 reading comprehension
    • American Legion School Medal for leadership, knowledge of current events
    • NHS membership
    • State Champion (as part of team), Future Problem Solvers Competition, as well as 2nd place for Scenario Writing
    • Placed 5th in state NSDA Congressional Debate Nat Quals (fourth alternate competitor in case the others got sick! [they didn't])
    • Numerous awards of excellence at 9th grade graduation in every subject except Biology, as well as High Honor Roll
  • Service includes monthly volunteering at soup kitchen (10-12); NHS tutoring and service projects (11-12); tutoring kids at my elementary (10); interning at summer camp teaching kids creative writing (12)
  • I spend my summers staying at various places in my state (lake condo, mountain cabin), road-tripping, photographing and writing; sometimes when my family can afford we go to the Pacific coast (LA, SF, Seattle)
  • Academically strong in history, philosophy, English; Bio also good; math a bit difficult but I work through it
  • Non-academic interests include photography, graphic design, film, creative writing, and architecture
  • Working on project of interviewing multiple people about how they decided who they are in life, what mark they want to leave (hoping to use this possibly as application essay material) in order to help myself figure what I actually want to do. I have a personal goal of interviewing at least 50 people by summer's end.
  • Major-wise I'm undecided, but leaning towards history, gov't/poli sci or foreign affairs. Journalism a maybe.
  • Have 3 recommendations lined up, all from teachers I'm very friendly with; 2 advised clubs I run, the third is my art teacher (who's also a neighbor of mine). Considering asking my (retired) French teacher just in case. All these teachers were my favorites. (My school's teachers are excellent)
  • Counselor has 300ish students, but has noted my academics several times and so her recommendation will most likely be good
  • Not necessarily high school but as an essay topic I was thinking of discussing how in the second grade I made a stop motion video that made it to the nat'l level in the National PTA Reflections contest, and how it taught me to face down my anxiety and be loose in my creativity
  • Come from middle-class suburban background in Western state; in past 2 years family income has dropped significantly, so financial aid is really, really, really needed
  • Parents have bachelor degrees but no graduate degree (though mother has teaching license)
  • High school is public, about 1000 students; US News ranked it second-best in my state, and it is a significant magnet in my metro due to its IB program (the IB coordinator is a Brown alumnus)
  • I am a white male and questioning bi/homosexual.

It’s impossible to be certain that you’ll get in when applying to top schools, but you have a profile that I think is strong enough that you definitely have as good a chance as any other top applicant. Just make sure you really show off your passions in your application and that your essays display your best writing ability. Congratulations on all your accomplishments so far!
