Chance Me (Babson, Skidmore, Wesleyan, Brandeis)

After getting deferred from my ED1 School (Babson,) I decided to apply to a few more schools. As a nervous senior with post application anxiety, I thought that making one of these threads would be fun.

State: AZ
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Major (general): Business/Computer Science

Scores
ACT: 31 (E: 29, M: 27, R: 36, S: 33). 7 overall on writing. I’m not a great writer on the fly, often I like to take time to revise my piece to make it better.
SAT: 1370 (R/W: 650, M: 720). 6 on writing.
A-Levels: Business Studies (B), AS Global Perspectives (a), and English (D - I got an A in the class overall, but I think I just bombed one of the heavily weighted papers which caused my score to bomb. It was about theories of language development, not even related to writing skill.)

Grades
3.61 UW GPA
Weighted GPA: Not offered at my school, even though A-levels are rigorous courses.
Class size: 13 (its a super small school!)

Extracurriculars:
Interact District Council (2 years, member then District Governor. I planned and led a 100 person leadership conference)
Another Interact District Council (1 year, Assistant Governor/Webmaster. These two Districts are merging. I made a new website and managed the social media for both districts.)
Interact Club (2 years, President/Founder, completed a plethora of service projects such as raising money for a well in South America and food drives)
Moot Court (2 years, member then Internal Executive Director. Was accepted to the National High School Moot Court Competition at Duke University two years running)
Sunday School (volunteer teacher’s aide, then was offered to be paid as a head teacher’s aide. I worked with 5th/6th graders, and also worked in the office)
Library Volunteer (2 years, helped arrange tai-monthly bookstalls that raised over $10,000 for the library)
Internship at Children’s Hospital (2 years, only high school intern they’ve ever had, working on Information Technology/Business Administration)

I do have more extracurriculars, but I only mentioned those here because they are what are on my application and what I consider ‘most important.’ I’m a member of NHS and Thespian Society, but not very involved in either/didn’t do them for very long. I was also on our school’s Robotics team, but only did that for a year and we didn’t do much.

Additional Information: I had a chronic disease (basically Chron’s Disease) for most of my high school career. This caused me to miss about 130 days of school to date.

Letters of Rec:
Psychology/Business Teacher: I haven’t seen her recommendation, but I’m sure that she wrote me a very strong one. She’s basically a second mother to me. 9/10.
History Teacher/Principal: 8/10

Additional: My mentor I work with in Interact. He had a very high ranking in the military, and a very impressive resume himself. He wrote me an absolutely stellar recommendation (100/10)

Common App Essay: 9/10. I wrote about my experience in the hospital (Without going into too much detail) and how the volunteers there inspired me to become an intern at the hospital and volunteer more.

Writing Supplements: My Babson one is probably 9/10.

Schools applying to: Babson (ED, deferred), Brandeis (EDII), Skidmore, Wesleyan, possibly Colgate

College information: I thought my interview for Babson went well. I also went to their information session and preview day, where I presented my group’s mock business in front of about 100 other kids and my interviewer. I was talking over e-mail to an admissions counselor for a while about getting credit for my A-Levels. I went on a campus tour of Brandeis, but didn’t interview or anything as I hadn’t been interested until I actually saw the campus on a whim.

Thank you for all your help!

Forgot to mention senior course load.

First semester: Yearbook, AS Physics, AS History, AS Psychology, A-Level Psychology, Internship.

Second semester: All of the above, plus a second internship, a 200 level public speaking course, and A-Level Global Perspectives.

I only know Babson, but I think you might be rejected, it’s hard to get in with those EC/GPA. Best of luck though!!!

Well my fingers are crossed! The Babson alumni I talked to were shocked that I was deferred. My GPA isn’t TOO far off, but I know its below the average. I hope my chronic illness helps kind of explain that to admissions. I wish that I had done something like DECA or started a business, but I didn’t know that this is what I wanted to do until my sophomore year. I tried to start a DECA club but there was 0 interest in my small school.

Hello there, I remember you! Anyway Brandeis is probably a little bit less competitive than Babson and your GPA and ACT seem to be in the range to get in so I’d say Brandeis is a match. Let us know if you get in. The thing about Brandeis is you need a very high GPA.

Does your school have Naviance? Is one of the best ways to see your chances of admissions.

Having a job is a great way to show how hard you work, more specifically a job in an office type place can really help.

I have my internship at a major hospital that I work at all day Fridays. I also get paid by my Sunday school so I probably work at least 15 hours a week with those two. My school doesn’t have Naviance.

bump

@will999 doesn’t know what he is talking about.

As you can see here your 31 is in the 75th percentile of the, school (Babson.) As your GPA Babson has reported a B+ average for the class of 2019 although that has inflated to around a 3.7. I would assume you have the scores and grades to get in. Your ECs are really good they’re definitely not bad. A lot of people look at Babson’s low acceptance rate and assume it means its extremely difficult to get in, even though acceptance rate almost means nothing. Although it looks like you need around a 32/33 and a 3.7 or better GPA to get in to Babson this year. Match

As for Skidmore, Rigor is much more important than grades/scores (ovibously grades and scores are important but a lower GPA can be compensated with a difficult school/rigor of courses) Skidmore accepts a good amount of their early applicants, last year It was around 70% Skidmore is definitely a good option and would be surprised if you were not admitted. If you apply ED II I would be shocked if you get rejected. High Safety- Match

As for Wesleyan you need a really good ACT and really good GPA to get in. Your ACT seems to be good enough, but not your GPA. Wesleyan is a High Match- Reach

Brandeis average GPA Is a 3.95 but that is WEIGHTED, most people assume you need a near perfect UW GPA for Brandeis but thats not the case. Your school doesn’t have a weighted system, but when they recalcuate your GPA you are probably going to be in the 75th percentile. You ACT score is the exact average so I would say Brandeis is a Match- High Match.

Chance me if you have time! I made a thread if you could take I look I’d appreciate it!

ALSO: Don’t Submit that SAT Score your ACT is a lot better.
If I were to predict which schools you got into I would say
Accepted: Babson, Skidmore, Brandeis
Deffered Wesleyan

Wow, thanks for the reply! I’ll definitely chance you when I get the chance. I applied ED II to Brandeis to boost my chances there, plus it has a much stronger appeal to me than Skidmore. I haven’t been to Skidmore, but just based on research alone I feel reassured in this opinion. I submitted both my SAT and ACT. My SAT Math makes up for my poor ACT Math score, and my ACT Reading/English makes up for my (average) SAT Reading/English score. I didn’t really want to submit my SAT but it’s a bit too late now.

Wesleyan isn’t my second choice, and I would be plenty content to get into Brandeis or Babson. I also applied to ASU Barrett, so that and Skidmore are sort of my ‘safety’ schools.
