Summer programs: I attended Barnard’s Pre-College Liberal Arts Intensive Program this past summer and absolutely loved it!! I’m hoping this will strengthen my application

Interview: I interviewed while at my pre-college program and I’d say it went pretty well. I was expecting a current student, but instead I got an older alumna, which was fine! We had a great conversation

Essay/Supplements: I worked really hard on these and I’ve heard from Barnard admissions that the supplements are probably the most important piece to your application so I really think this is a strength.

Academic Recommendations:
English teacher- He had me both freshman and junior year and I was hoping he’d write about my improvement as a writer
Sociology teacher- She’s the sweetest person in the world! She’s also the sponsor of Psychology Sociology Club that I’m Vice President of so I’d say she likes me just fine haha

Optional Recommendations:
I got my boss from my summer internship and my field hockey coach to write me letters of recommendation because they see me in a different light, you know not just as a student.
I also included my evaluation from the Pre-College program I attended which I’m hoping will help a lot because the program was at Barnard

Concerns: I dropped out of Honors Spanish 4 my sophomore year and had a hole in my schedule for a semester, the dropped class will show up on my transcript, and I’m nervous this will really hurt me. Also my sophomore year, I received a poor grade in Honors Algebra 2 first semester, but I addressed that my family was going through a difficult time in the Additional Information part of my Common Application.

I’ve shown a lot of interest, showed up to every local info session I could, I even traveled to NYC for their open house, I’m just really hoping it all pays off because I can’t imagine myself anywhere else
It’s probably a reach, but I’ve been dreaming of going to Barnard since freshman year, I just want someone’s opinion on whether that dream is realistic. Thanks!

I have the same sat score and GPA

oh cool, did you apply ED?

yes ma’am

Also, I hope the essay/supplement part is the one of the MOST IMPORTANF

i’ve been to a few info sessions and they always say the writing is the most important part. finger crossed they love my supplements!! i can’t believe we find out on wednesday ahh i’m so nervous

I hope we both get in
I don’t think I can with my SAT score tho

I feel that :frowning:
But I also remember one of the admission reps from an info session I went to saying they never reject someone solely based on their SAT or ACT score because they really embrace the holistic review approach. Let’s just pray other parts of my application make up for my poor test scores
I really hope we both get in too!!! Good luck for tomorrow!

I am so nervous omg

Like everything is fine besides my SAT score so I hope a holistic review means a holistic review

I can’t believe we’re less than 7 hours away from finding out ahhh i’ve been so nervous all day because I have no clue how they’re going to react to my application. I really have no idea what to expect.

Just curious: Did you guys get in? I’m applying RD and I’m nervous too. Ahaha

@La petite crise cardiaque I was deferred so I’m in the same boat as you now. geezus I can’t wait to hear back in March

did you get in??

@Dhhhhhhh I haven’t heard anything back yet. Decisions should come out later this month. Ahh I’m so nervous

@ccgf01 What did you send in for your supplemental materials after you got deferred??

@ibsadgurl Oh wow, I sent a lot of stuff. In the deferral letter, Barnard says they’d like to see writing samples, additional teacher recommendations, another letter of interest, and anything else you’d like the admissions team to review. You don’t have to send all of those things in, but I’d highly recommend it.

I sent in writing samples from my AP Lit class and from a college class I took through my high school’s dual enroll program (I took Intro to International Relations). I sent in three pieces, and my AP Lit teacher helped me narrow it down (I sent a research paper from my college class, and a thesis statement and an analytical essay from my AP Lit class.) Writing samples are great to send in because I’ve heard for years that Barnard is a writing school and my SAT scores aren’t the best, but I’m a much better writer than test taker.

I also sent in additional recommendations. I don’t believe this limited to senior year teachers but asked my AP Lit teacher (because Barnard loves their writers and she would be able to give a senior year perspective in her rec). I also asked the senior class Administrator/Vice Principal to write me a recommendation. I go to a large school, but since freshman year whenever she’s asked me where I want to go to college, my answer has always been Barnard. I was the only person to apply ED to Barnard at my school, so my Administrator didn’t feel as if she was giving me an unfair advantage by writing me a rec. I didn’t know if she was actually going to be able to write it before I asked her, but when you’re deferred for a school as competitive as Barnard, you need to stand out and reach out to as many people as possible for help.

I sent my admissions rep an interest letter, which is kind of like the Why Barnard supplement but you aren’t restricted to 250 words. Really just expand upon your supplement and get super specific. I want to major in political science so I researched the professors and mentioned a class I’d be interested in taking. Barnard Apps are holistic, and they say they look at every part for your application equally, but showing continued interest and telling them, firstly, how you would contribute to the campus, and secondly, what you’d get out of attending Barnard are some of the most important aspects of your app.

I also sent them an update letter of everything I did since I submitted my ED application. My mom’s friend is a college counselor, and she recommended I send this in. It’s important for schools to know you’ve continued with your extracurricular (or picked up some new ones) and kept your grades up.

Lastly, I sent in art samples. I wasn’t able to pursue art in my class schedule, but I took classes outside of school, and I am in my school’s Art National Honors Society, which is something I didn’t have room to put in my extracurricular section of the Common App. You’re able to submit a portfolio through your actual application, but because I was deferred, I didn’t have access to edit my submitted application, so I just put a bunch of pieces in a Word document and emailed it to my admissions rep lol.

I sent in a ton of stuff because there isn’t really an official procedure to being deferred which stinks, but you just have to do the best you can to show continued interest.

If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to help!

I’m wondering if you guys got in!
