Elder care family duties, helping care for grandpa with Alzheimer’s after he moved here due to COVID (common app essay)

Tough to say. Your SAT score and GPA are just about average for BU admits. Going ED2 probably boosts your chances a fair bit. I’m not sure, but I’d guess the extracurriculars are right in the middle. As for the common app essay, I would strongly recommend not writing about COVID, as while trauma/stress stemming from the pandemic can affect your life a lot, it’s something almost everyone’s gone through, and I’m willing to bet a fair amount of other applicants are writing about COVID, too. Unless you have something interesting or unusual to say, I’d write about something else.

No the essay is about the grandpa with Alzheimers (he just happened to come because of COVID, but that is not the focus of the essay at all)

Do you agree he really he has to go ED2 vs RD?

I think so, my nephew has a similar GPA, more AP’s, ADHD, a 35 act/1540 sat and was rejected ED1 at northeastern, and they give a big boost to ED applicants, he was full pay.

In case it’s helpful, DD22 was rejected from BU last year with a 3.94UW, 4.4W gpa, 1470 SAT, 12 APS, mostly all 4s and 5s on exams. Tons of ECs and leadership.

You have a chance due to ethnicity. I hate to label it as such but it is what it is. Otherwise it’d be tough.

Good luck.

If it’s not too late, do NOT mention ADHD in your application. Schools want to admit students they are confident will thrive. Having an asterisk is not good. If ADHD held you back in High school, they will suspect it will only hold you back more in college.

My son is ADHD as well, he has 504 accommodations. And his stats are very similar to yours – 1430, 3.85, 4 APs… He did NOT mention his ADHD issues anywhere in his applications. He got into his ED school and the three EAs that released before his ED. He got lots of merit offers. Now that he is in, he will follow their policy to seek ADHD accommodations. But you should NOT mention it in your application.

Wow, it is too late, we had sent it by Dec 1, cause we got confused, that was a scholarship deadline. But the ADHD was not in the main essay, it was a short thing in the is there anything else you want us to know and I am pretty sure he wrote it in a way that said these have been my challenges and this is how I have overcome them.
Bottom line, he is such a reach for BU, we applied regular by 12/2, got rejected to NYU ED1, so may switch this to ED2.
He does already have two good other schools for film with nice merit scholarships, so he will be fine in the end. But he likes big city feel, so he loved BU.
