Chance Me: Case Western, MIT, Notre Dame, Wash U, Northeatern, RIT, Yale

(Posting for my son)
HS Junior:
ACT: 35 (36E, 35M, 35R, 35S) not superscored
GPA: 3.8 UW
School does not rank
May make National Merit. My selection index is exactly what the cutoff was last year. Will almost certainly get National Hispanic Recognition.

Hispanic male from KY.

Attended local public school 9-10. Took 3 AP’s sophomore year (AP Seminar, AP Calc, AP Stats) 5 on all AP tests.

Starting Jr year (this year), attending a residential dual-enrollment STEM academy at a state university. I take all college classes as a HS student and live on campus.

Jr year classes – Microbiology with lab, Genome research, Calc 2, CS, Computational Problem Solving, Chemistry with Lab, Bioinformatics with Lab, English Lit, Electrical Engineering. Sr year will be Physics, Multivariable, etc.

EC:

  • Cross country, swim, and track 9-10 grades. My current school does not have sports. I do triathlons and races outside of school.
  • Science Bowl team. Highly competitive team. Our 2 teams generally come 1,2 in the state
-BETA, Mu Alpha Theta, Science Club, etc. (Won first place in Math at state BETA convention)
-AMC12 – hoping to make the AIME this year. Had the highest score in the school for AMC8 and AMC10.
-Lots of math academic awards at the regional and state level. Won Regional MathCounts 2 years in middle school and won full tuition scholarships for state school.

-Work as a lifeguard over summer
-Typical volunteer activities…helping with middle school and elementary academic teams, working at a thrift store.

Planning to apply at Case Western, MIT, Notre Dame, Wash U, Northeastern, RIT, Yale. Majoring in Engineering.

My concern is the GPA.

3.8 UW should not be an issue for the schools on the list. RIT is a match and the others are reach/low reach just because of the acceptance rates. Hispanic who is potential NMSF studying STEM is a hook.

MIT might require some national level honors. It may not be absolutely necessary but it would be helpful.

For Engineering I might take Yale/Notre Dame off the list and substitute Georgia Tech/CMU/Johns Hopkins.

Case Western/Northeastern should be a match/high match as well.

I agree with @Hamurtle about his suggestions for schools to apply to. Honestly, as an URM with a 35 ACT and great coursework, you have a pretty good shot. Best of luck
