chance for any sort of full ride/merit aid please (for tuition only; housing is irrelevant, will live at home)

thanks, if you need more info, ask

IF YOU HAVE THE STATS OF PEOPLE WHO GOT FULL RIDES, PLEASE POST YEAR OF ADMISSION AND THEIR STATS

Hahaha~ Pardon my laughter, your stats/extra currics are almost identical to a friend of mine… who did not get a full ride, and ended up at MIT.

Your application will definitely be strong. Take note that UW does not look at SATII/AP scores in the admissions process. Also, you will only be able to choose 5 extra curricular activities to write about in your application. I suggest choosing wisely - make them be ‘well rounded’ and a lot of ‘leadership’.

You say that your essays are high quality - have you… written them (prompts may change from year to year)? Or just anticipating the quality?

Your GPA/test scores put you in a good position - what will really add to your application for a full ride is your extra curricular explanations (No one sentence descriptions here! I wrote 3 paragraphs for each of mine! Description, leadership roles, my impact/what I got out of it) and essays.

This could be taken as a insult or compliment, but from your post, you sound like a typical Chinese person I know (And probably from a school like Garfield or Newport). Make your essays dynamic; don’t ‘blend in’ with the other Chinese people who have the exact same resume.

As for people I know who got full rides, besides being from top schools with rigorous classes, almost all with at least 3 courses from some college in high school program, some basic stats (years being graduation year from UW):
3.9UW/2350 (2014), 4.0UW/2390 (2013), 3.9UW/35ACT (2013), 4.0UW/2400(2011).

Interested in ethnicity? Their extra currics were pretty ‘stereotypical’ as we generalize across different people - Hispanic, Chinese, Chinese, Korean.

So yeah. It’s competitive. Don’t expect a full ride just because, but you’d be competitive.

sorry but idk. it ****es me off youre looking for a full ride when your income is 200k+. honeslty, your family has the money to pay for your college. that money should be going to other kids that dont have the money to go to college. Thank God i was smart enough to start saving a few years ago just to get me through this first year of college. Yeah sure, you may be smart, and you may be good enough to get a scholarship, but it just kinda gets on my nerves when someone with that kind of income is just looking for more money, when they are perfectly capable of paying for themselves. Its like me wanting to go buy a candy bar for a dollar. and i have 5 dollars in my pocket, but i still ask my friend for a dollar cause i dont want to spend my own money. I understand many people might not like my view. But put yourself in my shoes, and you’d understand.

No offense taken, bothellcougar, it bugs me too. Your family can well afford to pay for your college education at any school in the country and with your stats you are competitive be admitted to any school in the country, I don’t know why you are limiting yourself to the UW. Also, if you live at home you are going to miss out on a lot.

i didn’t ask for opinions on how “right” it is to look for a scholarship or what sort of “college experience” i’m going to be “missing out” on, so i don’t understand why you obviously feel some compelling need to post about it in the thread. i’m so sorry that i don’t want my parents to pay any more than they have to, and i apologize if it offends you SO MUCH that i’m just trying to give my parents a break, but if you’re not actually going to respond, i’m not interested in what you have to say

@speedsolver: ok, thanks; essays are already written, i’ll probably post them/have people edit them later

You sound like quite the tool, I hope that comes through in your essays

Write engaging/diverse essays and I believe you will be fine. However, there are no guarantees.

Most people that I know of who got full rides have similar stats to yours but the only difference is that their income bracket is extremely low. Considering that UW is having financial problems due to their funding being cut, you may not get a full ride so don’t be surprised if you don’t get it.

Also, don’t take this the wrong way but with the income that your family is bringing in, it makes it seem like your family is pretty well off without financial assistance. You have your own reasons as to why you want a full ride, but it’s just peculiar for a person whose family’s income is 200K to ask for a full ride. Just a thought.

^
Lol costax.

wwwwwwwww, they’re just a little irritated that there are low-income students that barely scrape by financially in college, when there are also people who have parents that can more than afford to pay for their college tuition, probably twice over in this case, that seek full-rides… And I can definitely see where they’re coming from…

Btw, I do know of a person that claims to have gotten a full-ride, it may have been just tuition, but I don’t remember. He had a 4.0, tons of APs, good ECs - in general very overqualified for UW. I’m just a little skeptical to believe him because looking at the UW’s financial standing and how this person loves to receive compliments… Idk…

Hey guys, remember OP is looking at MERIT BASED scholarships (usually donated by someone/some organization for pure use for merit scholarships), not trying to suck money from Husky Promise or something with tax evasion.

For whatever reason OP is looking for a full ride, let’s just respect that.

The Washington Scholars program offers merit-based tuition to any school in Washington.

I don’t mean to sound dense but did you apply for a merit-based scholarship for admission?

Does UW even give merit full rides? (other than through the honors program)
And sadly, the Washington Scholars has suspended scholarships at least through 2013 :/

With regard to Pea’s post, Washington Scholars for 2011 have been named, but from what I understand, they have been told not to expect any scholarship money this year. This is quote is from the Washington Scholar site:

OOPS - same message as momomomo.

i like where your head is at costax.
