Chance me for any of the Ivys?

I’m going into my junior year, and I’m thinking about college. I want to go to a place like MIT, University of Michigan, Williams College, Harvard, Brown, etc. Here are my “stats”, tell me if you think I’m on track, and what I can do to improve my chances.

-3.9 weighted GPA (However, I expect that to go up a lot this year, becuase I’m going to study a lot more and dedicate most of my time to my studies).

 • 5 on my AP US History Exam
 • 790 on SAT II in United States History
 • Soon to be member of Tri-M (National Music Honors Society)
 • 3 Sport Varsity Athlete (Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track conference All-Star)
 • I come from a fairly affluent, very undiverse Massachusetts town.
 • My dad went to grad school (and later worked in admissions) at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (one of the places I REALLY want to go to).

Schedule For Junior Year:
AP Biology
Honors PreCalc
AP World History
AP Statistics
Honors English 11
Honors French 4/Honors Physics/AP Chemistry (not sure which one yet, I’m hoping for Chemistry)
AP Micro/AP Macro Economics (Self-Studies)

I plan on getting straight A’s throughout the year and hopefully straight 5’s on my 6 AP Exams, especially because I know that these classes are in my strongest areas.

I have a very, very strong interest in Politics and political science. I’m going to be volunteering for a candidate for Congress this November. I also plan on running for class president this year (I have a very good shot at winning as well). I also am extremely strong in the Math-Sciences and I plan on joining the Math Team this year. I’m also volunteering throughout this year at a local hospital to help patients who are living on ventilators and who must live permanently in the hospital. My top choice would probably be MIT.

I haven’t taken my SAT’s yet, but I’ve already bought the Princeton Review SAT prep book (2011 edition), and I’ll start studying it tomorrow.

What can I do to improve my chances of getting into some of these colleges? What do you think about these colleges?

Also, I know 3.9 isn’t the best weighted GPA, but if I get around a 4.6 this year, will that stand out to colleges?

Your weighted GPA has no meaning to us, partially because we don’t know how it’s calculated. Would getting a 4.6 junior year stand out? Maybe. How does it compare to your peers’? How does your schedule compare to your peers’? Those are the questions you need to ask yourself, rather than asking a group of students who really have no idea how likely you are to get in.

I’m working at a summer school program right now, and a Brown admissions officer came to do a seminar for the college counseling program. Students are given 3 actual files for potential students to Brown (from the past, of course). They work in groups to decide what result the kid should get. Their decisions normally differ from Brown’s decision. The moral: see what happens, study for your SATs, do your best this year, but don’t go off of the opinions of a group of (mostly high school) students who don’t know exactly what Brown is looking for.

Thanks Uroogla!

What race are you? Sadly this matters wayyy toooo much.

bebe, we need your SAT scores. Re-post after you get your results, okay?

@GreedIsGood I’m white.

@Jshain Okay, thats a solid plan. What SAT scores would give me a good shot at being considered?

Look for above 700 in each section.

Thanks hollyert! I’ll start prepping tomorrow (I got the Princeton Review 2011 SAT Prep book today!).

Look for above 700 in each section.

That would apply to Michigan, but would need to be higher for the Ivies and probably Williams as well-- I’d say above 750 in each section. Love the fact that you are a 3 sport Varsity athlete.

Thanks! Also, I know I can’t get into any of the Ivys with a 3.9 weighted gpa, but if I were to do perfect this year in school, would I stand a good chance despite my first two years (which were solid, but not GREAT)?

Wow, another person that is startlingly like me. You’re like a younger me, bebe, straight down to the running and politics.
