I’m transferring in Fall 2016 from the M/TS Honors Program at Rockland Community College. I’ll have my associates in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities and Social Science - Honors Track.
GPA is currently a 3.94 (I plan to get it to a 3.96 by the time I graduate)
Bulk of my courses are honors-level
Member of Phi Theta Kappa
Vice president of the Inklings (Medievalist club)
Eucharistic minister for sick/homebound
Interned at non-profit arts center
My HS transcript is certainly not on my current academic level. It’s like your average “good” student, with some B’s and stuff.
SAT composite was a 1760 (side note: should I retake that?)
5 in AP 2D Design
Member of HS step team for all four years and the captain of it during senior year
Does this stuff even matter? I wish it didn’t.
This is a case where I’m not sure who has advised you on your selections. You might have a chance at Wheaton (MA) or St. Lawrence, both potentially excellent schools.
@merc81 could you just help me understand why please? Is it because of my high school record or my current standing or both? The head of the honors program at my college helped me with these. We obviously agreed that they were reach schools, but I didn’t think it was impossible.
@EmRaeee: I certainly wouldn’t want to limit your choices with one hand but not try to assist you with the other. So what I am saying is, that as strong a student you are and as sincere as your interests appear to be, math – as it pertains to acceptance rates and average student scores at prospective college choices – and other objective factors do matter.
The transfer acceptance rate at Williams, as you know from your other thread, was recently less than one out of a hundred. So, mathematically, they should be ruled out for essentially every potential transfer applicant. More specifically to you, your SAT score, though perfectly fine, would be below the 25th percentile at, for instance, Connecticut College, a school considerably easier to get into than those on your list. Factors such as these, by themselves, do not absolutely predict whether you will be accepted at a given college, but they can be used as indicators of what may be appropriate match and, if you are interested in the concept, reach schools.
I definitely respect the commitment you have shown to what must be a very rigorous honors program at RCC. However, colleges will only be able to see a semester and a half of your work there. Prior factors will matter.
@merc81 I definitely see where you’re coming from as far as it being very unlikely. I just know it’s impossible if I don’t try, so I think it’s worth the attempt! I was just honestly curious about how much the high school stuff still matters at this point, mostly because I’m wishing it didn’t matter haha. They would be seeing 3 and a half semesters of college work from me, though.
Thank you for your replies. Let’s just hope for the best!
