Chance Me For Georgetown, UCSB, Oxy, +More?

Hello!

I’m a rising senior in HS and was hoping someone could chance me.

Asian (Indian) female from the Bay Area
Suburban school, around 2000 students
A top CA public school– very competitive
Child of immigrants (very common in my area)

GPA UW: 3.6 (again, a very competitive high school, plus had some personal issues freshman and sophomore year that contributed)
ACT: Taken 3 times
33 (English 35, Math 28, Reading 35, Science 35)
33 (English 35, Math 29, Reading 35, Science 34)
34 (English 34, Math 30, Reading 36, Science 35)
SAT II: Haven’t taken yet, planning on taking Math 2, Literature, and US History in the fall. Will likely get above 700 on Literature on US History, concerned about the Math.
Class Rank: My school doesn’t do class rank.

My school offers AP courses, but through high school I’ll have only taken around 3 or 4. However, by the end of this summer I’ll also have taken 3 college courses at the local community college. I’m very dedicated to choir, and have been in my school choir for all 4 years of high school.

Extracurriculars:
They’re very average or even below average.
-Work: I’ve been a swim coach since my freshman year. Started after an injury left me unable to keep swimming.
-MUN: 3 years, planning on next year too.
-Mentoring: Joined an organization during quarantine in which high school students mentor middle school students and keep them focused during their transition to high school.
-Literary magazine: Going to be on the team for my school’s literary magazine next year; a very selective team.

Other:
I haven’t finished writing my essays yet, but I do believe they’ll be strong. I do come from a very privileged area and don’t have to worry about money, which I’m very grateful for. For all the schools that offer an interview, I plan on signing up for one. I believe my letters of rec will be very strong, but one of my teachers who’s writing a LOR is married to my counselor and I don’t know if or how that’s going to affect my admissions decision. Not many people from my school apply to Georgetown (my dream school. Usually around 8-10 apply and 3-5 get in, only 1 ends up going most years).

Major:
International Relations/Politics/Affairs (depending on what the school calls it), Econ for some

Partial list of colleges:

  1. Georgetown (dream school)
  2. Barnard (applying Econ)
  3. UVA
  4. NYU
  5. UCLA
  6. Occidental
  7. LMU
  8. American U
  9. UCSB
  10. Fordham

What would you guys say are my chances of getting in? Additionally, what would you say are some activities I can do during this socially distanced summer to make me stand out?

Safety schools?

Although you attend a rigorous HS and it will be taken into consideration, for the UC’s GPA is king and even more so since they are test optional for next year. Your ACT scores will help your chances but neither UCSB or UCLA are going to be easy admits.

LMU is more a Match and Occidental probably a High Match along with UCSB. UCLA should be considered a Reach school. I cannot comment on the others.

Your EC’s are fine and all applicants will be at a disadvantage due to Covid.

Best of luck.

There will be many colleges in the fall who are desperate for money. Hence they won’t be handing out as much financial aid compared to years past. So this means they will be looking for full-pay students.

Getting into Georgetown with a 3.6 will be tough, but not unreasonable. Are you applying early? Are you applying to SFS or the college?

You would also be a good candidate for out of state flagships. Many are hurting for money and like to admit out of state students for the tuition money.

I am applying early, and will be applying to SFS. I know GTown doesn’t take early vs. regular into much consideration, but I figured since they don’t reject in the early rounds, having the possibility that they’ll read my application twice is a good thing.

UC GPA is 3.7, not much higher than regular. I have out of state safties, plus am applying to UCR.

2019 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 9%
UCSB: 6%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 9%
UCSC: 40%
UCR: 53%
UCM: 80%

2019 UC capped weighted GPA averages along with 25th-75th percentile range:
UCB: 4.23 (4.15-4.30)
UCLA: 4.25 (4.18-4.32)
UCSD: 4.16 (4.03-4.28)
UCSB: 4.16 (4.04-4.28)
UCI: 4.13 (4.00-4.25)
UCD: 4.13 (4.00-4.26)
UCSC: 3.96 (3.76-4.16)
UCR: 3.90 (3.69-4.11)
UCM: 3.73 (3.45-4.00)

25th - 75th percentiles for ACT composite + language arts
UCB: 28-35
UCLA: 29-35
UCSD: 26-34
UCSB: 26-34
UCD: 24-33
UCI: 24-34
UCSC: 24-32
UCR: 21-30
UCM: 18-26

Under a 4.0 capped weighted UC GPA makes most of the UC’s a tough admit. As long as you have some safety schools you are willing to attend, you should be set.

Best of luck again.
