Asian male

Every Ivy school is areach school for you.
Cornell: possible but reach

Okay thanks, that’s what I was expecting. I’m not really going to an IV school even if I got accepted (which I probably won’t) just because of my financial situation but I will apply just for the heck of it. Need a chancing yourself?

Also forgot to mention I’m majoring in biology or doing premed

I think you should apply. I don’t agree with 20More. I think you’re more than qualified to get into an Ivy. My friend just got into Harvard (she graduated IB) with almost the same stats as yours but a lower weighted GPA (4.3). I think you should apply. Your EC’s are fantastic.

^^^

Did your friend have any hook?
Was your friend Asian?

BTW, IB is not a big deal.

graceclassof2013 thanks for your reply. I’ve heard multiple stories of people getting in with mediocre stats or ECs and people with amazing ones getting declined. I hope we both get into the schools we want :)

What I’m really curious about is which schools are geared more towards ECs and which are for GPA because it’s quite obvious I would rank my ECs over my grades (except for my SAT which I think was pretty decent :P).

20more, we all know that IB is nothing spectacular and I’m not saying that either. IB is merely something colleges will see as an initiative I took in highschool to try a different path I guess. IB will not hurt me, though possibly it might aid me.

As for a hook, I have a feeling there aren’t TOO many people out there applying for schools that have an Eagle so that’s +1 for me. Also, I don’t think too many people go on mission trips too so that might count me in as having more diverse EC’s so another +1. The added effect of me going international with the mission trips and being IB might mean something to them too, who knows…

Any college is, first, an academic community. Your academic record is the primary consideration.

IB should help. It’s a known program with loads of challenge.

Being an Eagle Scout should help for the same reason.

Mission trips actually might hurt, though. Adcoms will ask why you had to go so far to do such minimal work. Why couldn’t you do it in your own community?

Wordworker, well I was helping the tribes cope with the recent war. We didn’t have a recent one in America :P

Funny thing is I’m going to UH even though I could probably make it into some nice schools, but all my aunts and uncles (12) are UH alumnis so I guess I’m next in line…lol. (Parents won’t pay for anything in college-I have to get things with my own money or scholarships)

Well, we actually have an ongoing war in America in our inner cities. Our inner city hospital emergency rooms run programs to try to keep young men who have been shot once from being injured again (if they survive). They also train trauma specialists who are going to war zones in other countries. These programs happen a block from College Hall.

If you worked in such a program for a sustained time, then you’d be impressive, because the people running the program would have decided you have something valuable to offer. Otherwise, an untrained, limited-time volunteer brings questionable value to a mission trip.
