Hi :) I was wondering if you think I don't have to give up my dream of getting into an ivy league yet~ I haven't taken the SATs yet (I'm not a junior yet) but will be taking them either next year or the year after that. I will also be taking my first AP exams this coming May~
- GPA: 4.0
- Clubs:
1 club I'm in organizes activities to fund-raise for homeless people in foreign countries and the country I am living in right now (not the states)
1 I'm involved in collects donations from basically everyone in the school (it's a school-wide thing) and we use that money to buy presents for orphans in orphanages near our school.
1 I'm in teaches english to school janitors who are mostly from various places in S. America.
1 I'm in makes accessories (beading); we sell them at the school's food fair + send the money to people in poor countries.
I'm also in dance because the courses I've chosen don't allow me to take gym or dance as a class and I really don't want to get unhealthy. Oh and I'm also a member of the National Honor Society.
I don't have any leadership positions just yet because at my school, the club sponsors give leadership positions to seniors only~
Do you think the clubs I'm involved in are too random or thinly spread? Most of the clubs I'm involved in has to do with community service (except dance) because I really enjoy fund-raising, holding bake sales, sending out thank you notes to donors, and things like that. Do I just look like I'm trying to impress the admissions officers...? Am I involved in too many clubs?...Or is it the other way around? Also is it necessary to start a club or an organization? Many people are scaring me by saying that I have to start at least one or two clubs to get into my dream college (Ivy)! I don't know if that's true or not and I'd really appreciate your opinions&answers to my Qs! Thanks!

High chance of rejection. ECs are mediocre. Being an international doesn’t help.

@aegais: Thanks for telling me What would non-mediocre ECs be? Any suggestions?

All of them to be honest. They seem cookie-cutter.

@HobbitTon: hmm what do you think I should do? I’d really appreciate your suggestions! 1 question, is it bad if your ecs are similar to each other? cuz mine are i think and both you and and aegais have said that they seem cookie-cutter :)

It’s not bad, but your set of ECs are quite mundane (i.e. nothing special) and the fact that you do not have leadership only compounds the problem. Do you require financial aid?

@aegais: oh… but it’s impossible for me to be a leader of a club… nope I don’t require financial aid… so you mean it’s easy to get rejected if your clubs are boring…? hmm… what would special ECs that stand out be? Anyway, thanks for your replies :)

There are already discussions on what good ECs are: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/210497-those-ecs-weak-so-whats-good.html

@aegais: Hey, thanks for the link! I really appreciate your help
Oh I have another question…(sorry for being annoying)… I moved in the middle of my freshman year and when I came to my new school, I wanted to focus on getting used to the new place and getting used to the school building (I transferred from a rather small school) and so I began most of my clubs at the start of my sophomore year… that means that it’s gonna look like I participated in the clubs I’m in for 3 years… is that long enough? Or does it look like I started participating in clubs all of a sudden in 10th grade? (btw, I was involved in several clubs at my old school for 1st semester of grade 9. It’s just that this was my first time moving and it was really hard for me and so during my 2nd sem of grade 9, I mainly focused on getting used to my new school and making friends).

Most of my main ECs were not started until 10th or 11th grade.

@aegais: oh phew Thanks so much for again! really really appreciate it :)

@aegais: sorry, i meant to say ‘thanks so much for ur help again’ not “thanks so much for again” :)
