Essays and Recommendations are very good.
I am in-state an will be applying EA. I go to a top 50 school in MI.

***** I have concerns regarding the decisions on the chance me threads. People that I have met in real life that attend Ann Arbor tell me that there are a lot of kids that get into AA with ~27 ACT and 3.8 gpa, but on CC, some users laugh at the very thought of someone getting in with those stats. That confuses me a lot. I know my GPA is low of AA, but I do have an upward trend and pretty good LORs.

--Do my ECs stand out? I am mostly thinkning about the internship and hospital volunteering hours.

You’re on the low end of the range for both GPA and ACT so it’s a reach right now. 50 hours sounds a lot more like a job shadow than an internship, and that’s not super uncommon.

Lower chance than match but not as bad as a low reach. It means you are near the low end for acceptance. You do have a chance if you have good essay and recommendations.

T50 high school in Michigan is not meaningful, what-so-ever. I’d bet you get accepted, but all of your volunteering reads like complete BS to me. Not that it is, it just seems off to me. Hopefully you write about it in a way that makes it sound authentic and meaningful

AP scores have little role in admission, even subject test do not have much weight for UMich. The HS ranking in Michigan has changed the criteria last year. Even the top 2 feeder schools for UMich now have only 60-80% rating. The previous ranking system was a better indication of competitiveness of the school. Top 20% of highly competitive school does indicate the academic strength of the student. The new school ranking system is not really meaningful in telling the quality of students but the management of the school.

@alopez, I have a LOR from the volunteer coordinator that I am sending verifying I completed 120 hours of volunteer service at the hospital. Also I was given three awards because of my “dedication”: two from my school and one fromit the hospital. All three will be listed on my common app. Moreover, my internship was completed with a UofM Alumni, do you think that would assist me in any way.

@Billscho, once again, thank you. If you don’t mind answering my alumi question that will be helpful. Should I include it in my supplements?

the quality of your school somewhat matters. For example, if you’re from a top magnet school like International Academy where the average ACT is 28.9, then your 29 score won’t be doing you any favors.

However, if your school is on the bottom tier where the average ACT is 20 per say, then that 29 will look a bit better.

The second scenario is better since it shows that a person is able to overcome the shortcomings their school’s quality and resources vs. the former who had more opportunity

As for the additional recommendation letter, if you think it can cover additional area (e.g. research experience) that are not mentioned in the other LOR, you should include it. Just do not overwhelm the adcom with unnecessary additional LOR that may lead to a negative impression.
