I’m not too familiar with the UC system as I live on the opposite side of the country, but with a 1980 SAT, 3.7 GPA, your ECs and your service hours, Berkeley and LA seem to have higher requirements than what your stats indicate. They also have very low acceptance rates which figures into their status as reach schools. Being in-state helps, but you are going up against very competitive applicant pool of students who have scores in the 2200s and 4.0 GPAs. Your status as an Asian also hurts somewhat, but it shouldn’t be a deciding factor. However, your GPA’s upward trend, if emphasized, could help push you over the edge. You have a chance at all those schools. Not a spectacular one, but a decent one.

It was smart to address the drastic change in your essay but your ending GPA may still not be enough for Berkley & UCLA which are very good schools. I would say UC Davis & Irvine would be better matches. I’m not from Cali though so I don’t have as great a knowledge as some
