Please chance me for Purdue University (EA), Univerity of Washington (RD), University of Michigan (EA), UT Austin (Priority), Georgia Tech (EA), UCLA (RD), and University of Illinois and Urbana-Champaign (EA). I want to major in computer science.

Race: Indian
Gender: Male
SAT: 1390/1600 (670 reading, 720 math)
GPA: 5.11/5 weighted, I’m not in top 10% and school doesn’t rank people who aren’t in top 10%, but I estimate that I’m in around top 17%. Class of 800 students and fairly competitive school.
Courses: Almost all honors and AP courses, 10 AP courses in total including senior year.
Senior year course schedule:

  • AP Physics 2
  • AP English Literature and Composition
  • Honors Astronomy
  • Honors Earth Space and Science
  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP Psychology
    Extracurriculars:
  • Worked as lead developer at my father’s start-up company, led team of 20 professional developers
  • Learned, taught, and competed in computer science club for 4 years, held secretary position this year
  • Nominated by state legislator to complete coursework related to space and STEM created by NASA, qualifying me to be a NASA High School Aerospace Scholar
  • Volunteered in National Honor Society of 3 years
  • Member of App Development Club for 2 years
  • Member of FIRST Robotics Club for 1 year, built robots from scratch to compete at FIRST Robotics competition
  • Member of Solar Car Club for 1 year, build robots from scratch to compete at Solar Car Challenge, where we raced against other solar cars
  • Math/reading instructor and grader at a learning center called Kumon. Taught from grades kindergarten to 9th grade and graded their work
Volunteer work: approximately 110 to 150 volunteer hours
Essays and short answers: People told me they were very good
Recommendation letters: 1 rec letter from my AP computer science teacher and computer science club hoster, 1 rec letter from my honors geometry teacher, and 1 rec letter from my honors astronomy teacher

Please chance me for these schools. I know computer science is very hard to get into, but please tell me my odds of getting into these schools. Thank you.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say I’m a Texas resident.

Since you are a Texas resident, it’ll probably be very hard for you considering your stats. You’re not in the automatic admit range, and you’re applying to CS, which is extremely competitive. Your SAT score is good but not that high, so you’re gonna have to use your EC’s and essay abilities to their full potential in order to get a leg up on the other applicants.

UIUC CS is a reach for anybody. What is your uwGPA in 4.0 max scale? UMich is a reach with below admission average SAT from OOS.

I know that computer science is extremely competitive, but could you guys give me like a percentage chance that I get accepted by at least one of these schools for computer science? Like 40% chance, 50% chance, etc.

Do you have safety schools on your list as well? I don’t see a “sure thing” anywhere.

Well I thought Purdue and University of Washington were safeties… I guess not. But I’m gonna apply for CS to UT Dallas or Texas A&M which are definitely safeties. The thing is I wanna go somewhere far from home, and start fresh, but those colleges are too close to home.

I’m not as familiar with Purdue, but UW most definitely is not a safety.

UCLA is a Reach with your SAT score and being OOS. Also, you will receive little to no financial aid as an OOS student at UCLA, so expect to pay $60K/year to attend.

You’re probably right. But can you please give me an estimate though on my chances of getting accepted for CS into at least one of these schools? Like maybe 40% or 50% or something? It can be a ballpark estimate.

CS at Univeristy of Wa? Reach. Its an exteremly competitive program, and if you don’t get into CS direct admit as a freshman, I wouldn’t go there bc its even harder to apply and get in as a current student.

GT, UIUC, Umich, UCLA, UT are all gonna be below 30%, apply anyways but have limited expectations… add some safeties as well.

Purdue is probably a match if you don’t apply CS, a low reach if you apply CS, around 40% I’d say for Purdue CS.

“For 2017, fewer than 3% of UW freshman applicants who listed Computer Science or Computer Engineering as their first-choice major were offered Direct Admission; these students had an average unweighted GPA of 3.97; average test scores of ACT 34, SAT Math 764, and SAT Verbal 758; took a rigorous high school curriculum; provided evidence of meaningful extracurricular activities; submitted strong personal statements; and were mostly Washington residents.”

The acceptance rate for admission later is 40% BUT the competition is still brutal, weedout classes are crazy, and if you don’t get in you either have to switch majors or transfer, which is not a fun situation.

This is depressing, looks like I’m screwed. Do you guys recommend me any top ranked schools for computer science for me that I can reasonably get into?

anyone?

You need to move lower in the rankings to find matches and safeties.

Have you come up with any other criteria for your list besides “top school?”

How are you screwed? You have in-state options.

You picked a laundry list of public universities whose primary role and purpose is to educate taxpaying residents.

As an OOS, you don’t have priority and your scores are not tippy top. The UC’s have caps on OOS and internationals.

Also, those schools are not going to provide any funding. They are obligated to their residents first and foremost.

Did you not spend any time researching these schools?

Oh, and working in your father’s start up- leading a team of 20 developers-will not be considered a legitimate EC.

My take, for CS
Purdue University 60-65%
Univerity of Washington 30%
University of Michigan 30%
UT Austin 50-60%
Georgia Tech 50%
UCLA 40%
University of Illinois and Urbana-Champaign 40%

Good luck!

The OOS admission rate at UMich is around 20% or below. OP’s stat is below average applicant and would not have a chance higher than 20%. The mid 50 SAT this year is 1350-1530. I would say the chance would be around 10% or less.
For UIUC CS (even they have multiple CS programs), the chance is in single digit.
Purdue is a match though. Unless they have changed their application process in the last few years, it is not directly admitted into a major.
For UT Austin, you can pretty much forget about it. Most of the seats are filled by instate auto admission. There are only 7% students from OOS.
