Chance me for Stanford, UChicago, Cornell, UC Berkeley, Harvard

What is the situation with applying as a CS major at Stanford? Isn’t everyone considered undeclared when they are admitted then have to declare a major sophmore year? Would it hurt then to put CS as an academic interest?

At UMich, you apply to a school. You’ll pick a major by the end of your sophomore year. You can get a BSE degree from the College of Engineering or a CS degree from LSA (Literature, Science & Arts). There are some small differences, but almost exactly the same requirements.

However, since the CoE enrolls about 1,300-1,400 freshman and LSA enrolls about 4,100-4,200 freshman, getting accepted to LSA is slightly easier at UMich. Mind you, from OOS, it’s not easy to get into UMich no matter the school, but your odds of admission to UMich are better by applying to LSA.

Now being in LSA, you can change or add any LSA majors as often as you would like. In the CoE, you can change your major within CoE, if you so desire. Or you can switch schools to/from CoE/LSA too.

The overall OOS acceptance rate to UMich is 19% for the Class of 2022. And I believe for the Class of 2023, the acceptance rate edged down slighly, but no official data is available yet.

@sushiritto Thank you! This is some valuable information that I will use when applying to UMich.
