Chance me for the Indiana Academy (2 year residential HS)

Hey everyone! I posted a chance me a year ago for this (god knows why, I’m not even applying til August) but obviously a lot of things change within a year. Definitely am not in the position or place I thought I would be a year ago, to say lightly.

I’m a white transgender male attending a slightly below average high school in one of the largest cities in Indiana. I live with only my dad and we are a lower middle class household.

I have a 3.92 GPA. I had a 4.12 before the second semester but due to circumstances out of my control my grades dropped. There is a spot for me to explain my grade dip.

Courses taken:

8th grade-

Algebra 1
Introduction to Two-Dimensional Art
Spanish 1
Geometry

Freshman year-

Honors English 9
Digital Applications and Responsibility/Physical Ed 1
Honors Earth and Space Science
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Biology 1
Spanish 2
Theatre Arts 1

Sophomore year-

Honors English 10
Health Education/Physical Education 2
Honors Chemistry
Dual-Credit Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry
AP Psychology
Spanish 3
Honors World History and Civilization

I’m taking the SAT in August. I’ve taken a handful of practice tests and average around a 1260, with a 650 R+W and a 610 Math. Have been studying this summer and am continuing to do so, hoping to hit a 1300+. The school recommends a 1000.

As for my good ol’ extracurricular activities. See, my list is a bit complicated. I’m not sure if I should talk about my old school’s activities cause I was only there for a semester. The joys of being forced to move schools, amirite? Anyway-

Student Council: I am in Student Council at my school. There’s a pretty hard application process you have to go through to get into it.

Spanish Club: Just a fun club, I guess. Nothing serious. I like to speak Spanish.

Academic Team: I participated in the social studies academic team. Was the only freshman and the highest scorer. Sadly, I had to miss the area competition because I got a throat infection, thus continuing my streak of good luck.

Internet leadership: I run an online community of over 1600 people based on a pretty niche (and nerdy) interest. We’re partnered with other communities, some reaching member counts of over 10,000.

Educational YouTube videos: I’ve been putting together a video series about small island nations that interest me.

Local internship: I have an internship with a huge “local” company starting in September. Don’t want to give away too many details cause they could be traced back to me. Am the only teenager.

DECA: I signed up for DECA cause my friend forced me to. I’m pretty excited for it.

School orientation leader: I’ll be showing freshmen around at their orientation next month. 100 people applied for positions but only 15 got one.

Spell Bowl: I’m going to do Spell Bowl this fall. I won the school spelling bee in 8th grade so why not try and extend my winning streak  (jk of course)

Science Olympiad: I just started my school’s first ever SciOly team! Pretty excited for this. Don’t expect to go very far but it’ll be fun seeing what we can do.

Sooo… yeah! I’m applying to the Indiana Academy partnered with Ball State U. If anyone can tell me my chances of getting in, I would greatly appreciate it. If I don’t get in, I’m going to attempt to graduate early so I can transition. I might mention how going to the Academy would help ease my depression bc I would be more comfortable presenting male. Thanks in advance!

I think you have a great chance of getting in! Your ECs are good, your GPA is good and that’s all that matters anyway  However, I would suggest you try to increase your SAT score just a bit.

Good luck!

Thanks! I’ve been working on that

Hey, I’m bumping this thread because my Dad and I have decided to also apply to a handful of boarding schools for my junior year as a pipe dream. Right now, the ones on my list are Holderness School and Concord Academy. Can anyone suggest any more? I’m just looking for 100-600 students and a nicely wooded campus.

Heyo! Sorry for the bump, but I’ve got a pretty like sketched out list that I’m applying to this year.

My list is as follows: Andover (my favorite), Exeter, Concord Academy, George School, The Storm King School, Mercersburg Academy (my second favorite), Deerfield, Brewster Academy, Putney School, and Middlesex, along with the Indiana Academy.

Uhh I mean I’ve done more… things, since I posted this thread, so let’s do a nice formatted post, amirite?

My grades last semester dropped heavily due to my mom attempting suicide, being hospitalized for weeks, arrested twice, and me having to move schools with no notice and falling into a deep depression. I’ve since gotten help and am better now.

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Science Olympiad, I founded the team and I am the captain. I'm doing 6 events.
  • I work at Taco Bell. I clean, prepare food, and serve customers- about 15 hours a week.
  • I'm in DECA, doing Sports and Entertainment Marketing Operations Research. I'm doing a project to go directly to state, bypassing regionals.
  • I'm in Spell Bowl. Kinda easy, tbh, but I really enjoy it and I think my team will go far.
  • I bowl for my school's Junior Varsity team. I'm not good by any means but it's fun
  • I'm in Student Council and a part of 3 committees- bulletin board, welcoming, and banner making
  • I run a large online community dedicated to the pursuit of academic interests and post-secondary education, we have 2000 members and have partnered with communities of over 10k.
  • It's not a 100% certainty but if I do well on an interview I will be an intern for an NBA G-League team, just sort of helping out around games.
  • If middle school stuff counts, I was president of NJHS.
  • I did track for 2 years in middle school and plan on doing it again this year but I had to take a break my freshman year due to everything that was going on. In 8th grade I was the best thrower (I do disc and shot) on the 8th grade team and got 2nd or 3rd most meets. I also was chosen to represent my team at the conference invitational.
  • I was on the academic team at the very end of the year last year. We got 6th at a large invite but I had to miss the competition to go onto state due to a throat infection.

Subjective:

Essays: I’ve been working on my Andover supplements. I’ve had college aged friends look them over and stuff. I mean I think I’m an okay writer but that’s not really something I can judge.

English Rec: My English teacher really likes me, we joke around during class all the time and she picks my work usually to be an example (we have a board of 12 annotation papers that are the best, according to her, and out of her 280 students 5 of them are mine). I hope she writes me a good rec.

Math Rec: Okay, I think my math teacher likes me? I’ve had him for 2 years now and he’s told other teachers I work hard and participate and stuff, but it’s not a super personal relationship. I assume he’ll write a very average rec.

Other Rec: I’m asking my Spell Bowl/Academic Team coach for a rec, we’re pretty close and I think she’ll write a good one!

Yeah, so that’s my uh… profile? Do I have a chance at any of the schools for either 10th repeat/11th grade admit? I’ve not decided which one yet but oh well. Are there any other schools I should look into?
