Chance me for Top Choices? Will Chance Back

University of Virginia, UCLA, Tulane, University of Maryland, Michigan

White male, junior.
Come from a very prestigious public school in New Jersey, approximately 80 in the nation according to Newsweek
I transferred to the school my freshman year as a tuition student, so I was completely new to the area and my classes I had taken in middle school were far less advanced than the courses the typical student was taking at my age, so I needed to do a lot of catching up. (Which is why my courseload my freshman year is completely different than that of my Junior year)
Intended Major: Double Major with Business and Spanish

GPA: 98.2059 (Junior year is about a 101 so far so this will go up come the end of this year)
SAT: 2090 (CR 720, W 690, M 680 - this was second time, will take again once more)
SATII: None taken yet, but plan to take Spanish, U.S. History and maybe Chemistry at the end of this year

Classes:
*Freshman - Advanced Alg 2 (A), CP Global Issues (A), Spanish I (A+), Honors English 9 (B+), CP Biology (A)
Sophomore - Honors English 10 (A+), Honors Chemistry (A-), Spanish II (A+), CP U.S. History I (A+), Advanced Probability, Statistics, and Trigonometry (A+), Advanced Geometry (A)
Junior - Honors Precalculus, Honors English 11, AP Chemistry, AP U.S. History, Honors Spanish 4

Senior (Intended) - Honors Physics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Comp Sci, AP Calc AB, AP Spanish

**My previous school didn’t offer a spanish program or a higher math program, so I needed to take basic level Spanish and Math that year. Also, I was told that it wasn’t a good idea to take too many honors classes in this school upon arrival, so I took classes that were too easy. Note the gradual moving up in each class
*Took Spanish III over the summer

Extracurriculars:
National Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society (next year)
Varsity Soccer - 10,11,12
Freshman Soccer - 9
JV Winter + Spring Track/Field, 9
Stand with Camden (volunteer service club centered around paying the tuition of a particular student in a charter school, and also is involved with other service opportunities in the city of Camden) - 9,10,11,12 (plan to hold leadership position next year)
Leo Club (also volunteer service but centered around the immediate community around the school) - 9,10,11,12
Interact Club - 9,10,11,12
Lifeguarding at a local Swim Club – 10,11,12
Junior Urban Medical Program (JUMP) @ local medical university – 10
Club Soccer - 9,10,11,12 (Captain 10,11)

Community Service:
Peer Tutoring in Spanish and History - 11 (will do 12) not sure how many hours
Volunteer @ Hospital of University of Pennsylvania - 9,10 (Team leader - 10); 96 hours total
Miscellaneous service activities in the community; approx. 100 hours so far (still have rest of Junior and Senior year to go)

Haven’t thought too much about recommendation letters, but I feel my 11th grade english teacher and academic counselor would write very good ones about me.

Also, one question. I had once thought that I wanted to be a doctor, so I decided to pursue extracurriculars in that field, i.e. Junior Urban Medical Program. Will the fact that now I want to major in business void this as an extracurricular? Thank you for the consideration.

I can only comment intelligently on UVA and Maryland.

UVa: probably. It’s a selective school, so you never know, but you’re pretty strong, and you’re at about that level.

MD: pretty likely. Unless there is something hidden from view, like, you’re an axe murderer or something, getting into UMCP should be a breeze for you. MD is pretty numbers-driven, and you’ve got the numbers.

Just, beware, entry to the Smith School of Business at MD is not guaranteed to everyone who is accepted to the University. If you are accepted to the University, in your acceptance letter, they will tell you if you also got into the business school.

Good luck.

From a stats perspective, you are right in Tulane’s sweet spot. Now you end to decide whether you really want to go there. If you do, you will have to supplement your stats with knowledge of the school and an indication of your desire to attend based on that knowledge. I will tell you that your emphasis on Spanish will serve you very well, as Tulane is one of the best in Latin American Studies. The A.B. Freeman School of Business has wonderful programs focused on international business, with a focus on Latin America as well, building on the University’s strengths. As you choose, follow your heart and best of luck to you.

Bump

If this helps, I got a $30k scholarship a year (the Honors Program) to Tulane with very similar stats…

Bump

Bump…

@collegegal1313 Thank you for the response, Tulane is definitely one of my top choices, and I’m glad to hear that because I would not be able to attend if I didn’t get a scholarship of some kind due to the cost of tuition.

UVA: High match
UCLA: High reach
Tulane: Match
University of Maryland: Match/low match
Michigan: Reach

You have strong EC’s and good test scores, but you’d have to improve your GPA/test scores in order to get into Michigan and UVA. I think you have a pretty good chance at getting into your other schools. Good luck!

@curiousminds01 did you really meant High-Reach for UCLA or it was a typo error?

In my opinion UCLA is a low-reach but with a SAT of 2200+ becomes quite feasible!
(Taking 2 subject tests with scores of 740+ will strengthen your chances)

@uclaparent9 Sorry!!! I was looking at the one above it and wrote high. Thanks for pointing it out, low reach makes much more sense!

@curiousminds01 Thank you for your feedback! Does the fact that I’m OOS change anything for UVA? I was worried about that.

UCLA gives little to no scholarships/grants to OOS students. Be ready to pony up $55K per year.

Can anyone else shed some light?

Can only say UCLA is a reach, due to OOS and low test scores.
