Chance me for UMBC?

I am currently a High School Junior and am really considering UMBC my number 1 school, but I'm also considering Penn State, UMCP, and Washington college. I will be applying early action, and am wondering my chances of being accepted EA.

I am in the IB diploma program and have been for all 3.5 years of high school, (well, Pre-IB for freshman and sophomore year)

GPA:3.07 (UW) and 3.47 (W)

SAT score: 1290 2-part, 1920 3-part

Class rank: 113/560

EC's: Mock trial, Key Club, Indoor Lacrosse, Vocal Ensemble, Relay for Life, Tri-M Music Honor Society

Major: English with a focus on media studies

Volunteer work: ASP 3 years (habitat for humanity type work in central Appalachia), Courtney's house (safe-house for battered women), Relay for Life

Leadership: Grade representative in youth group for 5 years, Co-leader of relay for life team for 2 years.

Cool~! UMBC is one of my choices! I researched UMBC and their average un-weighted GPA is about 3.61. Your EC’s and your Volunteer work are good, but it won’t be looked into as “Very Important” I would try to work harder also I loved how you improved your SAT score :)

Ive researched it too, and 3.6 is their average WEIGHTED gpa. And I’ve only taken the SAT once, but UMBC typically views the 2 part and 3 part score separately.

bump bump bump

Your unweighted GPA is a little low, but you have a pretty good chance. Your EC’S and volunteer work looks good. Try to raise your SAT to 1350 and 2000. You have a pretty good chance though. What program are you applying to? Honors?

You’ll be accepted for regular decision no problem. Your EC’s and SAT scores seal the deal. I was just accepted to UMBC back in January and had lower GPA and SATs than you (2.8 unweighted and 3.2 weighted; 1750 SAT). Extracurriculars, essay, and early application probably saved me.

If you want to be accepted early, I’d increase your SAT score (which is already very good) and take the ACT (aim for about a 28). It’s a little late to improve your GPA, so I’d just focus on those two tests and your essay.

Complete side note: I’ve met a lot of the class of 2016 on Facebook, and these are some smart, chill people. Plus a lot of us seem to be into running and music. lol You’d fit in fine right now! What made UMBC your top pick?

I suggest you take the ACT. Also visit – sign up for any events they have STEM Scholars Day, ect. to show UMBC you have a great interest. It is an amazing school and a great value!

I think you have a decent shot.

For UMBC, your SAT score is wayy above average. There high average SAT score (low 75%) is 1700ish. Work hard and get like straight A’s 1st quarter of senior year (plus you’re in IB. That means something although you have a 3.1). You’ll be fine.
Even for UMCP, you should be fine. Just get that GPA up a bit.
I’m applying to both of those schools too (Meyerhoff at UMBC)
Oh, and your SAT score is fine for Penn State, once again its just the GPA.
In fact, I think you should look up some more high tier schools. You could get in.
