RM: if they have the right stats, they may be accepted. Priority goes to California residents and, as it is, the schools are full.

The schools can accept 10% oos students. The other 90 must be in state, no matter the budget situation

Well Aunt Bea actually for a biology degree with emphasis in marine biology or with out, it does not require me to be near the beach OR near sea turtles, there are always summer programs available in Florida and in Georgia for sea turtles. I said I have family in California and I’ve been there multiple times so do not talk down to me like I think a San Diego school is gonna have an ocean view with sea turtles flopping around.

And FYI I don’t much care what you call it Cali, Cal, California, when I’m typing I abbreviate because like I said I’m a senior in HIGH SCHOOL (meaning I am a teenager) and I came here for advice, not for some immature adult to have an all mighty attitude cause s/he is from California.

I’ve already picked some schools in Fl and state schools in Cal, so these aren’t my only options; that would be very unwise. And I understand wanting what’s best for the true tax payers of Cali’s college students and the grudge or whatever it is I’m seeing a lot of California residents have against non-residents because as I said I lived in Orlando. I HATE tourists making everything more expensive and traffic more backed up ect. But at the same time I’m still from this country and so are California folk at least the last time I checked.

I am very sorry to hear about your mother, that must have been awful. As you note - you did quite a job keeping it together and getting through high school with a B+ average. I’m sure she’d be proud.

The water’s cold but Humboldt and Monterey have good Marine Bio programs with ready access to the Pacific. With a 3.18 and decent test scores (maybe 1100/1600 SAT) - you will, likely get in even as an out of state applicant.

The northern end of CA is a different world than So Cal - so the experience will be very different. They are both well respected schools. Humboldt has been around longer so, probably has a more established program.

NCalRent thanks for some positive feedback. My main reason for coming on here was because I was really stressed and upset because I know for a fact if things didn’t spin into chaos like they did for me I’d be back to a 3.7 at MINIMUM and it just really angers me that my scores don’t reflect what I’m actually capable of. This yr I finally get a stable home, I have all honors and 4 AP classes and I’m getting almost straight A’s but it’s too late. In all honesty it’s not fair. I know I could have been Davis, or even Stanford material.

I’m going to look in Humboldt and Monterey Bay again. Being too far from L.A. is kind of a concern of mine because that’s where all of my family is in Cal(even though they swear they’ll make the drives still…) even if my grades were up to par UCLA wouldn’t be an option for what I’m interested in. I have an interest in San Diego State, San Francisco State, and San Jose for their bio program’s emphasis/concentration in marine biology. I’d love to hear some opinions/facts on those schools.

Oh and I don’t mind at all if the waters cold. I’ve never been a huge beach person, I got sick of it probably while I was living in Florida and now I don’t even go to the beach during my breaks down there. All I rly need is marine emphasis, a marine lab, aquarium, or tanks to be contempt.

Now I know I don’t have much experience, but you might want to give USD a try if you can afford it. I have heard from friends who go there that the religious classes they have you take don’t really force it on you.

Sea Turtle, not talking down to you, just talking reality. It’s expensive and difficult to live in California as an OOS student; didn’t realize that it was a touchy topic for you-for someone to even suggest that it’s not a cake walk. DD is currently at Davis (a school you’re interested in?) and she went in with over a 4.0 because she liked the school, and I know that Davis rejected a number of residents this year with high GPA’s since the school is becoming uber competitive for it’s veterinary programs. I gave you a list of privates that you could look up that probably are statistically better for you with your GPA, but they are expensive.

(BTW: Traffic is not that big a deal to us because we’re used to it. AND, FWIW, We welcome tourists and your dollars going into our system, cuz as I’ve stated, our State is broke, so your spending in our state helps our tax base. I was trying to give you a heads-up about the expense and the grades) You wanted information and I gave it to you, but you are choosing to call me immature because I have tried to give you facts. Welcome to California, your dollars are welcome here.

One more thought - several CSUs have introduced honors programs. They offer a more in-depth and engaging look at the GE classes in a smaller classroom. They also give you priority registration and a few other perks. My son is in the Chico program and is really enjoying it. There are GE and major specific versions. I know Sac State and Pomona have them as well. I understand many campuses plan to add them.

There’s a supplemental application that includes an essay.

They are kind of hard to find so, it could take some digging. CSU Mentor says Humboldt has one, but I couldn’t find more info than that. Maybe a call to the campus.

There’s some info on hte Chico and Sac program.

Aunt Bea you can continue commenting to amuse yourself but I won’t be reading your stuff. Too much stress in my life to have some grown woman talk like that to me.

Wow thanks NCalRent your being rly helpful. When I looked at CSU Mentor and was applying for Poly San Luis Obispo I didn’t see an essay portion which rly disappointed me. But I’ll check out those other options.

Those links were rly helpful. I looked into all of those schools and they all have concentrations in the biology field of study, but none of the concentrations are marine biology/oceanography:( The only one that interests me is Pomona’s concentration in zoology. :P

But San. Francisco, San Jose, Poly San Luis, and San Diego do and I’ve applied to these schools.
Also I’ve decided to add on Humboldt and Monterey Bay
