Chance me for Wash-U, Duke, Northwestern, Rice, UPenn, Brown?

I'm a rising senior, female, Chinese, from Texas.

I haven't settled on Duke yet as ED, but it is a candidate and it's possible I would end up choosing to apply ED. I'll just post my stats:

SAT I: superscored, 2280 (M:770, CR:750, W:760 Essay:10) 2 sittings
ACT: 35 (W:33, M:36, R:36, S:36, Essay: 9 <--ew)
SAT II: Bio: 750, Chem: 770, Math II: 800 French: 720
Unweighted GPA in terms of 4.0 scale: 4.0
At my school, we do it out of 12 (12 is A+, 11 is A and so on): weighted = 11.8
School doesn't rank, but definitely in top 5% out of a class of about 140

Freshman year:

Alg II and Trig Honors: A
Orchestra: A+
English I: A
French II: A+
Latin II: A+
Intro to Art I and II: A+
Biology Honors: A

Sophomore year:

Pre-cal Honors: A
World Civ: A
Latin III: A+
French III Honors: A+
English II: A
Printmaking/Mixed Media: A+
Chemistry Honors: A+

Junior year:

APUSH: A
English III: A
Latin 4 CL: A
AP BC Calc: A
French 4 AP: A
Physics Honors: A
Printmaking II/Mixed Media II: A+

Projected Senior year schedule:

Govt/Econ (no AP classes for those)
AP Crit lit
AP Physics
AP Chem
French 5 Literature CL
Multivariable Calculus CL
Advanced Portfolio

My school doesn't offer as many AP or CL classes, so every year I've had the most rigorous schedule possible

Honors/Awards:
Sophomore year: Chemistry and French III awards
Junior Year: French 4 award
High Honor Roll all 3 years so far (all A's)
French Honors Society 9,10,11
Latin Honors Society 9,10,11
I've placed in the NFC a couple years, I think once for the NLE
Regional and State gold medalist for piano solo in TPSMEA in 9th grade
Scholastic Arts silver key 11th grade
VASE regional and state superior rating 11th grade <-- I'm taking advanced portfolio next year so I'll definitely be submitting a visual arts supplement

Extracurriculars are a little slim

Volleyball four years: Varsity 10,11,12
Traveling competitive club volleyball 9,10
Piano lessons for 13 years
there might be some others but I can't come up with them on the spot

Summer:

Last summer I worked at my school's learning camp as a counselor for a month
this summer: research assistant position at a psychology lab (which I think is pretty strong) and taking a psychology class at Brown University

I have three teachers writing my recs: my pre-cal and calc teacher, my french teacher whom I've had three years, and my art teacher who I'll have all four years of high school. I'm really close to my french and art teachers, and pretty close to my math teacher, so I think they'll write great rec letters

One of the main things I'm worried about is the fact that I'm Chinese and that compared to the majority of Asians applying to these schools, my grades and test scores are average which makes my weak EC's a problem

Also, do you think having USC and UNC as safeties is okay? What are some other possibilities for safety schools?

Do I have a chance?

UT Austin as a safety?

UNC isn’t really a safety because your out of state, but if you apply to Duke ED I think you have a solid chance.

I think you have a great chance at all of them. The Ivy League schools may expect more EC’s, but you have amazing grades as well as amazing ACT and SAT scores.

I don’t think you have much to worry about, though. :)

Chance me back:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1357834-desperate-i-need-replies-asap.html

Bump? But I also need to add U of Chicago to this chance me list, I would definitely apply early action there, but I’m worried that my EC list is too thin

Of the top schools, historically Chicago and JHU have placed the least weight on ECs and if the essays are good to go along with your otherwise solid portfolio, you are a very competitive candidate there. Also, with non-binding EA, you may still use your ED (if you choose) on another school.

Your stats are very similar to my son’s who is also looking at some of these schools (2290, 1540 (CR/M), 3.9 UW, 780 and 750 on SAT IIs, strong ECs with one leadership position but nothing eye-popping). The main issue he is running into is how to use his ED. Do you go for broke at an Ivy such as Brown (or in my son’s case Penn) where even with these stats you’re less than 50/50 for admission or do you use it for Rice, JHU or Wash U where ED gives you a very good chance of getting in while RD puts you in that 50/50 (or maybe even less) category.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Good luck!

muckdogs07, I’ve found that Duke and U of Chicago are reach schools that I’m very interested in and would definitely go to if I were accepted, so I think I will end up either using my ED on Duke or simply going EA with UChicago. However, I haven’t finished my college touring; I still have the ivies to visit this summer. I might find that I like some of the ivies just as much or more than my current top choices, so if so, I will definitely have more thinking to do. If your son really loves UPenn, then he should definitely go for ED as long as he does have safety schools that he would like going to as well.

woohoo chinese people! hahah… until affirmative action comes along -______-

LOL anyway…

your standardized testing and grades are both definitely great, and i think that your “creative”/art stuff will definitely stand out (especially with your silver key).

overall, i suppose this really depends on what you intend to major in during college (if it’s STEM, then the arts stuff will stand out, but if it’s art, then i’m not exactly sure if there’d be a hook of some sort to draw attention)

solid chance at duke ED (a few got in from my school this year), so good luck!!

I strongly believe UNC, Duke, and UChicago would accept you. I think your extra curricular activities are sufficient and it shows dedication to only specific subject instead of some people who join everything. I dont think any of your schools are reaches, you have a fair chance at all of them. good luck. chance me back!

bumpppp!! Sorry, I’m just getting nervous about all this college stuffffff

bumpybumpybump

What is it that you want? As I’m sure you know you have a solid chance everywhere. All you can do is wait; no one here can give you an accurate prediction of what will happen until decisions come out. Relax, focus on your essays and polish your application.

Hello again! Thanks for replying to my Chance thread btw. As a fellow East Asian, I agree with you that there is more competition, but your standardized test scores are pretty high. You need to work on your ECs, and do you have any “hooks”? Applying for Duke as ED seems fairly high that you would get in. Reach for the stars and write a great essay!

you’ve been doing piano for 13 years. you need to talk about how passionate you are about it if you want to stand any chance with UPenn and Brown. I think you have good chanced at WashU and Rice. The others I think might be a bit of reaches despite your excellent scores. I think you should also call attention to the lack of APs at your school as the colleges you’re applying to may not know this.

Great chance for Northwestern, Rice, WashU, and Duke. I think that you should emphasis that you piano playing is your talent and plan on pursuing some musical element in piano at the school (even if you really won’t) cause colleges love to hear that their making a good investment and this applicant has a career and pathway ready for success. Additionally i think that Brown and Penn are good reach schools. But you’re definitely in the same league as the other applicants.

P.S. PLZ CHANCE BACK I’M DESPERATE

Your stats/extra c’s look really good. I am pretty sure that you will get into Rice, many students from my class got in. However, Duke UPenn and Northwestern are going to be pretty interesting. I say this because many students from may class did not get into these schools. My grades (top 2% of class of 819) and extra c’s, although different, were very similar (I got 33 ACT). I even did research and was a national debater but did not get into either Duke or UPenn. Not so sure about why not Duke, but for UPenn I think it really came down to essays. Two other students who were ranked higher than me and got 23 something on SAT did not get into those either.

bumpbump!!
