It is my understanding that students are not " accepted" into the honors college. My daughter received a letter stating that they are " strongly encouraging" her to " take advantage of the opportunities available" in the honors program. She also received a brochure highlighting just how amazing the program is. I think that everybody is permitted to take honors classes. Hope this explanation helps.

That is correct (Pitt Admissions staffer, here). You are not accepted into the Honors College, but if you receive a letter of admissions, it will tell you whether you are eligible to participate in Honors classes. For students who don’t meet the eligibility requirements as incoming freshmen, you also have the option to participate in the Honors College after two terms at Pitt if you maintain a specific GPA. Here is the full description of eligibility requirements: http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/course-eligibility

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the explanation . My D recently got that letter and was wondering if there were other forms needed to get in

@Iwonderwhere‌ Yep! There is no application to get in. When your daughter comes for her first academic advising appointment over the summer, she will be able to talk with the advisor about signing up for honors college classes.

@hailtopitt1787 Do the kids schedule the summer advising appointment? Is there flexibility with scheduling or orientation? Thinking of summer travel or jobs and time conflicts

Yes, there is some flexibility. You will get information about that whole process once it gets closer to the time for students to begin planning for the fall semester.

Thanks!

Who is eligible for Honors Housing?

@singermom4 You can find information on Honors Housing and the application process here! http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/housing/first-year-honors-housing

Technically as a freshman you need to be UHC eligible upon admission to apply to Honors Housing. However, there is so much space in Sutherland (the freshman UHC dorm) that if you are NOT automatically UHC eligible you can simply ask permission from the UHC to apply to their honors housing.

For upperclassmen (sophomores and higher) you simply need at least a 3.25 GPA to be eligible to apply.
