Chance me? (I already know it's a reach, but I want your thoughts)

About me: Female from California, URM (Half black), raised by single mother
My School: My school is only 4 years old and as far as I know hasn't sent any kids to any stellar schools besides Berkeley.

I think my GPA is a bit too low. It's probably around 3.5 or 3.6 weighted.

APs: I've taken AP US Hist, got an A in the class and a 5 on the test.

I have a very rigorous senior schedule:
Honors Eng. 12
AP Government/Econ.
Human Anatomy
Russian 2
Russian 3
Spanish 4 AP (Year-round)
Academic Decathelon

I'm on a block schedule.

SAT 2100 CR 800, M 600 (Low, I want to retake), Writing 700
SAT II: US Hist 740, Lit 700

ECs: I've played guitar for about 6 years, I played in my school blues band in 10th grade, played guitar for the school play, participated in drama club (10th grade), during 11th grade my after school time was pretty much all sucked up by my fast food job (have held the same job over 1 year). I'm a little late when it comes to volunteering. I'm starting at an animal shelter next month. I think I should have started sooner. For my high school senior project I'm learning New Testament Greek and doing a translation project.

I was told that a might have a better chance at Cornell because of my URM status, background, and because I want to major in an uncommon field (Linguistics. I also want to learn some computer science and maybe get into Comp. Linguistics, natural language processing, or AI). What do you think?

Cornell is my #1 reach school and anything you can think of is very much appreciated!

Try and raise your math SAT I a little bit. Do you have any awards or honors? Are you planning on applying ED or RD?

On a side note, what kind of guitar do you have? :p

you're definitely competitive i think...

i'm not sure how many math requirements CAS has but you should be able to do fine with a math score like that...

but yeah pick up a math SAT book or try ACT? you should be ok...but please do apply to as many schools as you can/want...

Other than those awards for good standardized test scores that the schools give out like candy, and a few 'Student of the months" in my AP History class, not really.

Forgive me for being ignorant, but early decision means I apply early and and if I'm admitted I have to go, right? If that means I have a better chance at getting in, I'll do it because I'm sure about Cornell.

I have a Jackson DK2 with the Eerie Dess Swirl finish and the original(terrible) bridge humbucker replaced with a DiMarzio Tone Zone.

To ResurgamBell, I think I'll retest and try the ACT. And I'll definitely apply to other schools, I'm not delusional and I know it's a reach. =)

Thank you both for your advice.

I love the Jacksons...I've got my good ol' Ibanez RG.

ED is, to the best of my knowledge, a binding agreement where if you're admitted, you're forced to attend. It increases the acceptance rate at Cornell from around 18% to around 37% from last years stats, I think.

I almost bought an RG, but the neck on the Jackson felt much more comfortable.

I think I'll definitely apply ED then. I almost want school to start again so I can talk to my counselor about all this stuff. Almost.

I think you've got a solid shot if you bring up your G.P.A. a little.

I'm going into my senior year and early decision deadline is Nov 1. How can I bring up my GPA?

You've got a pretty good shot given that you're an URM and have unique courses (Russian? O_o). Now focus on those essays!

I'm going to start choosing and outlining essays next week!

Russian is a great language. I love it. =) Thanks for your post.
