UCLA <------- My DREAM

what happened during your 10th grade year? did you include an explanation of what happened that year in your essay?

without knowing your backstory for your 10th grade year, i wouldn’t really know your chances, but i would say there’s a good chance u’ll get accepted if it weren’t for ur 10th grade.

EDIT: my bad, thought you were a senior that already applied. be sure to explain your situation in 10th grade in your essays when you apply.

I’m guessing something dramatic happened in 10th grade so what Whiztard said. If you can explain it well in your essay (and its a good reason), you’re golden.

Golden meaning i can get in?

Your standardized test scores if true are a shoo-in for UCLA. I hope you explain yourself in your essays about what happened in your 10th grade year because you’ll need an adequate reason for such a poor sophomore year. Just the fact that you have a huge upward trend will not get you in - otherwise everyone would bomb 10th grade and ace junior year and get in anyway.

It’s slightly hard for me to believe you actually have those standardized test scores given your 10th grade year. Those are what I would see in a top Ivy hopeful. If your scores are accurate then you should have been able to get better grades in 10th grade with your hands tied behind your back and your family taken as hostages. But again, I don’t know your back story and it appears you truly have had circumstantial happenstance in your past. If so, and you explain it in your essays, you are easily in as long as you can get the admission committee to understand what happened. If you don’t have a good reason it’s still a long shot but if your scores are not fabricated I’d say you still have a decent shot actually.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

My daughter has more or less similar statistics. She also took some courses at community college and got " As" in those courses she got lower grades in her high school. I really don’t know to what extent the test scores and CC courses compensate for the lower GPAs of the high school. Her statistics looks like…

She has applied to UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, CSU
Can you please chance her for these colleges? you inputs will be highly appreciated.

@anxiousguy
I think she will get into UCSD, UCD, UCI, and all CSUs, possibly UCLA. It is hard to say how much the admission offices will look into subject tests this year. But remind her to keep working hard for her senior year. UCLA requires unweighted GPA 3.0 or above in senior year. Best luck.

UCLAParent: Thanks for your valuable input.

NBDCHS: Yes, you’re correct. It is hard to score in high ranking schools. Btw, to what extent HS ranking play a role in admission process? Do they really consider difficulty level of the HS while in the selection? I was under the impression that the admission process considers only the difficulty level of the courses (such as # of AP/Honor courses) rather than the difficulty level of the HS.
