What are my chances? NYU, UCLA, Georgetown, Duke, Upenn, University of virginia, texas at austin, vanderbilt and Cornell.
First off my nationality is Portuguese. My race is white/caucasian. I have lived in Portugal, France and Brazil. i speak portuguese english and french fluently and i can get around with spanish.
I got 39 points in the hardest course (IB) My gpa is 3.7 on the unweighted scale (junior and senior ears). I also do 4 high levels instead of the typical 3 (Physics High, French High, History high and English Literature High). However, i only started doing good in school in my junior year so my freshman and sophmore years are pretty average in terms of gpa.I got a 2200 in my SAT.
Now extra curriculars i have played tennis for about six years now. I played football (soccer) for 4. Swimming for 3. I volunteer at an NGO where we managed to raise over 5000 dollars by organizing a concert involving local communities in brazil to play at. I used to play the guitar as well. I have travelled all over the world (don’t know if this counts our not) and my family income is high. I have also gone to multiple MUNs and even one in Yale. I have participated twice in the duke of Edinburgh programme. I have also won medals for Judo.
That is it i think. Thank you to who ever helps me out here by chancing me. Have a great day everybody.
What is your cumulative gpa including first two years?
NYU- high match
Georgetown-reach
Duke-reach
Upenn- reach
University of virginia-high match
texas at austin- match
vanderbilt- reach
Cornell- reach
they have such low acceptance rates I’d say don’t bank on any of them. Choose a few schools as safeties with acceptance rates closer to 50%. However, you should apply because your sats are up there and you have a decent amount of ec’s. if you could chance me back I’d appreciate it. I’d really like an unbiased opinion.
I will where can i find your post? I just made my account today
And thank you very much for chancing me
I’d move NYU CAS at least to match, but i agree to a20171

I’d say a good chance at NYU and Vanderbilt
Small reach for Georgetown
Reach for penn
Can say for other schools because I don’t know enough about them.

UT-Austin is not a “Match” for anyone from out-of-state now. This is widely known, and explained throughout this site. Most non-Texans are advised to drop it from their lists unless they have outstanding stats, can pay the out-of-state tuition, and have compelling reasons to want to go there. They have very few available slots for out-of-state applicants now. I think the OP has a pretty good chance of getting in, but it’s at least a high-match, and other schools are likelier to provide good aid packages if he needs them.
Hey again lol i changed the law thing so wouldn’t confuse people. When you say at least a high match that means that i have a lot if chance of getting in right? At least that’s what i understand from it: reach i can but it is hard low reach hard but i might get in and match is i will probably get in? And finance isn’t a problem for me. I honestly thought nyu was the hardest to get in- i always see posters saying nyu is really hard and etc
I understand your confusion; I think we all made the same mistake when we first encountered the phrases. A “high-match” is on the cusp of “Match” and “Reach” (ie. chances are probably a little under 50%, or they’re at least 50-50 for acceptance, but with little probability of a good financial package). I think most people view real “Matches” as colleges where you have a very good chance, but are not certain of admission or any kind of merit aid. These categories blur for top students looking at highly-selective colleges that are reaches for everyone. A student’s test scores and GPA may be well above average for Harvard or Stanford, but they will still be a reach. An out-of-state applicant to UT-Austin can be way above the median range, and still not have a great chance for admission given their commitment to accepting the top 7% of Texan high school students, since the top 7% at an impoverished rural or inner-city high school might not have very impressive stats. NYU depends on department. If you want to study film at the Tisch School of the Arts, or Finance at Stern, it is extremely competitive. It is not so selective for the College of Arts & Sciences, especially if money is not a concern (financial aid is notoriously scarce at NYU).
p.s. A “low-match” is very close to a safety, but might not be as sure a deal for financial aid, or a students’ chances are more in the 75-90% range. In some cases, it’s just a cautious term for a safety. One man’s low-match can be another one’s reach, after all.
Oh wow i had it all wrong then. Thank you for enlightening me and yeah i see what you’re saying with the U of texas, i will probably drop that one even though i wanted to study in texas and that is probably the best school there.
If you’re attracted to TX, give UT-Austin a shot; you certainly have a chance. Otherwise, look into Rice and SMU. I’ve heard good things about Southwestern, near Austin, but it might be too small for you. You could try Barrett Honors College at Arizona State, too.
Duke alumni here. You have a great shot. I encourage you to apply to Duke. Good luck.
Thanks man! Do you mind posting your gpa sat etc?
I can’t find if you mentioned what you want to study? Did you?
Rice University might work for you. It is a reach because it is so selective.
UT Austin admission can’t be predicted very well but you might be in the running.
Trinity University would be a match/safety I am thinking. It is in San Antonio.
