Chance Me?: Interests

Hello.

I’m applied to Phillips Exeter Academy, Deerfield Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, Groton School, Choate Rosemary Hall. St. Paul School, Hotchkiss School, and Darrow School, in order of preference.

One of my biggest passions is neuroscience and is interested in developing a cure for Parkinson’s disease in the future.

I saw a list of Phillips Exeter clubs online and saw that they surprisingly had a Neuroscience Club. I was wondering if neuroscience is a common interest among boarding school applicants. And also, would having this interest improve my probability of getting accepted into the boarding school?

I really emphasized my application on my interest in neuroscience and I was worried if this was ubiquitous among candidates and that I ruined my chances…

On a brighter note, good luck to applicants and family members on M10!

Who knows if it’s a common interest. The number of kids who change their major in college is very high so most adults dismiss the career aspirations of 13/14 year olds.

Having any interest, in other words being interesting, increases your chances of being accepted. Picking neuroscience doesn’t seem better to school than picking soccer or Spanish or robotics. They just want engaged and engaging kids.

No it doesn’t ruin your chances, unless your interest came off as disingenuous and trying too hard.
