Chance Me - Ivies and Williams

Hi, so I’m a senior at a competitive high school near Philadelphia, and I want to REA to Yale. I hope to double major in Physics and History. I’m also thinking about Boston U, Dartmouth, Williams, Haverford, Bowdoin, Colby, Harvard and a couple of safeties.

Class Committee - All four years
Key Club - All four years
Ambassadors Club - Junior and Senior Year (My counselor is the leader, so I should get a good rec from her)
Math Club (Vice President) - Sophomore year on
Robotics (Captain) - All four years. Leadership position given to me soph year. This is my passion, and I am deeply involved in the club, from advertising to fundraising. I volunteer in local robotics events. I have also helped formulate the business plan. I was the strategy/scouting leader this year, with our robot winning a regional championship (PA, NJ, and DE) and placing strongly at the world championship.
Japanese NHS (Vice President) - Sophmore Year on
NHS - Junior year on
Law Club - Junior Year on
Class Committee - All four years

I’m well versed in global issues and am intuitively good at Calculus, so my math and history teacher should provide good recommendations. My Japanese teacher also loves me a lot, so I hope to get one from her as well. I also had an awesome on campus interview recently.

You’ve got a shot at any of them but for a majority of them even with your stats it’s reach – because many of these schools turn away 4.0UW/perfect scores on the SAT/ACT every year, so you just can’t get comfortable with odds no matter who you are. Which is why safeties you could be happy with are important. Of those you listed BU and Colby would be the best odds, but are not true safeties. It’s helpful you are a male for the LAC’s because they get more apps from girls than boys.

Your EC’s are good, but my advise is most of them won’t matter most. The exception is Robotics. These schools want to see you emphasize EC’s where you are passionate, had a role that wasn’t just a title but where you had to do meaningful work and accomplish things, and where you made a difference. Being an officer in Math Club for example doesn’t matter. No harm in listing it but consider it neutral. But what you wrote about robotics – that’s what they want to read.

Good luck.

If you package everything together in a clear manner I think you have a decent shot. For example the Japanese and diplomatic stuff sounds quite interesting.

Focus on that and it may set you apart.
